At the Blood Bowl tournament I played 6 guys, 3 nice guys (1 German, 1 Brit and 1 American), 1 OK guy (Brit) and 2 A-holes (1 German, 1 Spaniard).... nationality does not necessarily affect a persons sportsmanship, but reading the posts here by Americans (yes, it's a big country, I know your not all inbred hicks) they all seem un-necessarily competitive and "yee-haw" compared to other gamers...
I take your point Pariah that, especially in Europe, violence often ensues from sporting events. Mostly, that violence has nothing to do with sport, but local rivalry, religious differences, racist issues and the like. The sport is an excuse for violent conduct, but rarely actual the reason for it...
It just strikes me that the goal of the land of the free and the home of the slaves pre-programmes Americans into huge nationalistic pride. Any opportunity is taken to wave the starry banner and sing a song about slaughtering the indigenous population. By contrast, I don't know the words to any national anthem and don't care to.
