Using Marauders instead of Beastmen in Chaos teams.
Hi,
I was wondering what people's opinions are regarding using substitute models. I was planning on converting my own chaos team using old models from my bits box as I'd like to try and give the players more dynamic poses, while doing so on a budget. I have a load of plastic marauders and was planning on using these instead of beastmen (as I don't have any beastmen models). I would obviously be using the beastmen rules and thought that I'd either use the mutated heads with horns or use the horned helmets to represent the horns skill. As players gain skills I'd be able to add mutations to these quite easily to represent the correct skill. Also as the are only warriors and beastmen (excluding big guys) I can't see the being a problem in identifying the different models on the pitch. My only real concern would be if people thought I was doing a converted norse or chaos pact team, even though I'd obviously tell people what team they were playing before a game was arranged.
thanks,
Mike

Shouldn't be an issue.... If you had beastman heads in the box, would add a new dimension, but the horned helms sound fine

Long as I can tell them apart from the warriors, I don't see a problem.

If you have an opponent that moans, give them a slap.
In all seriousness, I did similar (though I had some Beatmen parts so mixed and matched) and having played against a Necron Undead team and an Ogre team made of Giant and Swarm Spiders I can't see a problem - it's not as if you can have Marauders on a Chaos team, so how can it be confusing?

Thanks for the feedback. I couldn't really see there being a problem but it's nice to get other opinions

If you're worried about being able to tell the different positions apart at a glance (as much a potential problem for you as your opponent if you're anything like me) paint the sides of the bases different colours for different positions. In second edition Linemen were grey, blitzers red, catchers yellow, blockers green and throwers white but anything would do the job.

It's for a Chaos team, there aren't any positions.

A Chaos team with Marauders replacing the Beastmen has a better and more cohesive look (to the Chaos Warriors) in my opinion.
The Minotaur should be represented by a Chaos Ogre.

I actually played against a really nice Chaos team at the NAF that was the other way round - Beastmen for... well... Beastmen, and Bestigors for the Warriors on 30mm bases to make them a little grander. Very nice team.
I also wouldn't have a problem with it and I'm sure the players who potentially would are pretty few and far between.
That said, give 'em the horned helmets just to be safe

I played a necro team where every player was a werewolf. That was occasionally confusing Cannot remember who l played but it set the pattern for our second day.nonumber wrote:I actually played against a really nice Chaos team at the NAF that was the other way round - Beastmen for... well... So it wouldn't be possible to paint the base rings for the Beastmen one colour and the warriors another colour?Darkson wrote:It's for a Chaos team, there aren't any positions.

No, absolutly not! One of those strange physically impossible phaenomena scientists struggle to explain.Raveen wrote:So it wouldn't be possible to paint the base rings for the Beastmen one colour and the warriors another colour?Darkson wrote:It's for a Chaos team, there aren't any positions.

You can paint base rings onto a Tzeentch team but it's pointless because every time you look the colours have changed.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I like the idea of using an ogre. I have a couple of plastic ogres in my bits box. I could try and make it more 'feral' looking to resemble a minotaur in case people forget they have different skills.MattDakka wrote:A Chaos team with Marauders replacing the Beastmen has a better and more cohesive look (to the Chaos Warriors) in my opinion.

Conversions are fine much better than mere substitute figures in my opinion.
Coloured bases are fine too. I paint white lines on the linemen base or the 0-16 positional.
Most important thing is to paint them, nothing worse than unpainted models.
