Stage 3 Complete

b) finish off the helmet
c) foot hair
Well, the shoulder pads were annoying to do. I think I've got to the stage where I can do simple things, but, as with the chest plates, I struggle with duplication. Getting the pads to match was really annoying, requiring several layers of greenstuff and lots of filing, cutting and scraping.

The helmet I did when the pads were finished (see earlier comments about layering)

A bit f patience was required for this, but it seemed to pay off.

The foot hair was the most fun.

A thin layer of greenstuff and then stab it repeatedly with pointed objects. I mean this literally, although I did it with more care than the previous sentence suggests.

I did alter my plan slightly though. THe first thing you may notice is the lack of additional spikes on Puggy's helmet (supposed to go on the discs). They just didn't seem to work, so I chose not to do them. It would be easy to add this on after I paint him if I feel its necessary. The other addition you may notice is under his pointing arm - I added a sleeve to match the other arm. I think it helps to balance the mini.

Overall, I think he's not a bad approximation of the official model - short and squat, but quite solid.

Wouldn't even know where to start. :)

Painting to follow - the deadline is Friday(!)

Thanks for the comments guys.

it's coming together very nicely.. 8)

as for castable - it's not, and that's not a reflection on the work you have done:

1) you have used GW parts for the base, so casting this would be an IP infringement
2) those parts are plastic, and plastic does not withstand the vulcanising process of mould making (assuming pewter models was the end intention, resin casts can be done, though resin sucks)
3) I presume there is no wire frame stopping this guy from collapsing during the pressure of moulding..

anyway, all pedantry aside, it's a sweet sculpt.. one question though, is Puggy a secret weapon player??

Yeah, I wondered about the dagger? Kind of spoils it for me.

I'm glad someone mentioned the elephant in the room.

I think you have an awesome mini once you lost the daggers. Before that he will still look "converted", and I can't stop thinking that this is a hobbit rogue with make up on.

I think you misunderstood me - I would never even try to cast this, both for the reasons you suggested (mainly 1, as I didn't know about 2 and 3) and for the fact that this model is simply intended to be a conversion for personal use. When I said 'I wouldn't even know where to start' I didn't mean that I wanted to try - just wanted to profess my ignorance.

You all seem to agree on this point. To be honest, I'm not really sure why its there in the first place, and if the community feels that Puggy should be deprived of his Pie Knife, who am I to argue?

duttydave wrote:green stuff a knuckle duster
not sure on this one though - the mini's right arm is already significantly different to its left. if you look carefully, you should notice that its a steel gauntlet as opposed to a normal glove (one for hitting, one for handling). Of course, my other reasoning is that I'd like the little blighter to be painted by Saturday's tournament, and more greenstuff means more waiting before I can start on him. But really, I don't feel that he needs it.

I think part of the reason Puggy became a star was that he was one of the few 'Flings to put down the pie knife long enough to focus on the game. :)

Really?

I thought it was because he'd eaten so much pie that he'd become the uber-halfling.

Kind of like a survival of the fittest - he who eats the most, grows the most.

I bow to your infinite wisdom.

And the deed is done and Puggy has lost his pie knife. Painting will hopefully commence later today.

And having played against the little blighter at the start of day 2 of Newquay I can only say that the finished article was most impressive... :D
