What to start with in a Vampire team...

Post by Joemanji »

I was thinking:

3 Vampires
10 Thralls
3 re-rolls
FF 6

I think that, taking OfaB into account, starting with only 11 players would be suicide. Also, you'd need at least 3 re-rolls.

Also, is it going to have to be a boring Block/Dodge advancement, or can anyone think of anything better? Strip Ball seems like a good option at some point in a vamp's career. But how early?

Cheers! :D

That's not a bad starting team. I might ditch one Thrall for an FF of 9 and leftover cash, because I like the money to play with.

As for advancement ... remember these guys get access to Gen/Ag/and St skills.

That's really important.

It means with one doubles you can develop a Stand Firm, Dodge player.
Or a Jump Up Piling On player.

Block and Dodge is nice ... but reinforce your Vampires in other ways as well. Sure Hands for one and Catch for another gives you a decent passing option especially if you roll doubles and can get Pass for a Vampire on his first skill.

Pass, Jump Up,and Stand Firm are all great doubles choices for Vampires.

Also it depends on your play style ... Pro is very important to Vamps as it can save your rerolls or Thralls from failed OFAB rolls and helps with other things the Vamp does as well. I like Dodge for Vampires over Block simply because I really try to get the most out of Hypnotic Gaze rather than really on the ST 4 Blocking.

So for the Vampires ... I seriously would not be looking at Block/Dodge for the 1st two skills for any of them.

Oh and first doubles roll on a Thrall ... definitely no questions asked ... LEADER! With this team ... more rerolls is more bettter.

I think it really depends on what OFAB rules that you are using.

I haven't played with the on-pitch rules, but from reading them I would probably follow Galak's advice.

But with the off-pitch rules you would want to fill up on Vamps as quick as possible and to hell with the thralls.

I'll be using the on-pitch rules.

I really want to maximise the value of the vamps' Hypnotic Gaze. Multiple gazes is just soooo good. Breaking into pockets has never been so easy - especially against low AV blocker types. This must be the only reason to take a vamp team. (Hence me mentioning Strip Ball) That, and the flexibility to switch between running / passing plays mid-drive!

I like your idea for doubles rolls! <evil laugh> A Jump Up vampire would be so cool! Really in character aswell - they just keep on coming! :o Stand Firm and Pass would also both be excellent choices.

Assuming I don't get all doubles though, :) I agree that Dodge is a priority over Block.

But Sure Hands or Catch? Maybe you are right. But my instincts just scream out for a few players that are 'reliable' in all situations first. Get a few vamp blitzers before I add the vamp catchers and throwers, if you will.

It probably wouldn't be the best combo in reality, but can you imagine the look on a coach's face if he came up against a jump-up-ing, side step-ing vampire? Scary, or what?! :o

As a vampire coach in the MBBL, I'll just say one thing.

PRO

Take it first on all vampires (assuming no doubles).

I can't give advice on thre thralls, as the vamps keep killing them.

Currently an ex-Blood Bowl coach, most likely to be found dying to Armoured Skeletons in the frozen ruins of Felstad, or bleeding into the arena sands of Rome or burning rubber for Mars' entertainment.

Is Pro not a trait now? They missed it off the 2002 annual skills list, so I have never been sure.

Reduces the chances of failing OfaB from 1 in 6 to just under 10%... very nice. :)

Galak
Yes I'm quoting myself ... but I wanted to reinforce Darkson's advice.

By the way .. you can use Pro on a Hypnotic Gaze roll ... so on a Vamp its a very important first skill.
