Level 2 dodge...

Post by Talafar »

Ok this is a radical idea. It is not playtested, barely thought through, and very likely to be hideously unbalanced. But I think its kinda cool, so here goes...

Wouldn't it be good if the skills had different levels? That you could get players who were REALLY good at dodging, or blocking or tackling, etc.
The second and third levels of a skill would be accessible after getting the 1st (or 2nd). Not all skills would have extra levels, so very good skills like guard, would be a sort of "dead-end"
The second one wouldnt be that great, but the 3rd would, so if you went all the way you would get a reward. It would open up MASSIVE team development options.

Examples of some skills

Dodge lvl 1: as LRB.
Dodge lvl 2: as LRB but opponents with a lower level of tackle may not use that skill.
Dodge lvl 3: as LRB but you add +1 to all dodge rolls, and opponents with a lower level of tackle may not use that skill.

Block lvl 1 : as LRB.
Block lvlv2 : as LRB, but players with a lower level of block cannot use that skill.
Block lvl 3: As above and: You may convert any both knocked down results into POWS. Opposing players may only use lvl 3 block against you.

Dirty Player lvl 2: add +2 to armour AND injury.
Dirty Player lvl 3: Only get sent off on a 6+

Strip Ball level 2: as lrb but, works against players even with sure hands unless of an equal level.
Strip Ball level 3: as above but you may choose which square the ball lands in.

Leap level 1: as LRB
Leap level 2: you may leap twice per turn
Leap level 3: you may re-roll failed leaps.

Well I could go through every skill, but tis getting late.

What do you think?

Think this idea has been discussed before, can't remember how it went down but I am not a fan.

All of this would be great if Blood Bowl were more like actual American Football. As it is, in its rugby style play, it's just too complex.

They had levels for certain skills in 2ed but they weren't as complex as you have suggested. I had posted a similar thread last year, but the idea didn't get much support. Today, I wouldn't support such a change, don't think it's needed, though I think a few new skills could help the game a bit (if they were thoroughly playtested).

Well, it's absically how many 2nd edition skills worked.

I think it is a very bad idea should different skill levels cause qualitatively different effects. This would complicate the game inappropriately.
As long as mere comparison of levels is involved (i.e. Block vs. Block, Tackle vs. Dodge, Strip Ball vs. Sure Hands) this might add some spice to the game. Actually, I would probably like that. Players could developed more individually then. Might still be too complicated though.

I don't like the skills as you suggested them but I do liek the idea of stacking skills to attain more bonuses...IE a ghoul takes dodge as his first skill increase and so now he has +2 to dodge. It wouldn't work for every skill but that's okay. And some skills shouldn't be able to do it...IE Dirty Player but I wouldn't have a problem with a lineelf who had block and 3 levels of dodge. Sure he could dodge around and basically go anywhere unhindered but he's going to be limited to only that. At 4 skills he is destined to likely never get catch or sure hands or any other ball handling skills. On the other side of the coin an orc blitzer who gets mighty blow X 3 is going to be a 'BlackNDecker Halfling Wrecker' but not much else. he may sound scarey at first but if you think about it, he doesn't have anything but block and +3 to AV or INJ. No tackle, no stand firm, no blodge, nothing to to help him survive an attack anymore than a noobie orc blitzer.
As a after thought, this could be a doubles option, perhaps?

This has been discussed numerous times in the past, and I will only briefly repeat my standpoint:

-This suggestion has nothing to offer which would improve the game

A very well-put argument, I know, but you can find mine from the threads that you can find with the search-function.
