Dark Elves are rated low, because they are a bashy team without bashy stats.
They pay more for their thrower than High Elves dispite it being the same player. Are the slowest of the Elf teams, and slower than many non elf teams. Have no access to strength skills or big guys (all needed to play a good bashing team). Witch Elves frenzy got nerfed. The cheapest player is 70k. ect..ect..
Basicly they are a good idea, but poor implementation.

1. Wood Elves
2. Orcs
3. High Elves
4. Undead
5. Dwarves
6. Skaven
7. Chaos
8. Amazons
9. Dark Elves
10. Humans
11. Chaos Dwarves
12. Lizardmen
13. Norse
14. Goblins
15. Halflings
It is very difficult to rate the teams! I really don't think there is much in it at all between the top 13 teams. The Goblins and Halflings are clearly the bottom 2 teams. The rest can all be winners in the hands of the good coach.
2. Orcs
3. High Elves
4. Undead
5. Dwarves

9. Dark Elves
10. Humans

But it more comes down to the player finding the team that suits how he plays. Other than Norse I think all the other main teams are pretty close, but I'd put the first four on that slightly higher upper echelon.

My guess would be something like...
1.Dwarf
2.Amazon
3.Wood Elf
4.Undead
5.Skaven
6.Human
7.Lizardmen
8.Orc
9.High Elf
10.Dark Elf
11.Chaos Dwarf
12.Chaos
13.Norse
14 Goblin
15.Halfling
But as most have observed, it's pretty random in the top 13 - I feel more strongly about numbers 1-5, while 6-13 could probably be arranged in any order.
Oh yeah, I don't think dark elves are as bad as people have been saying above. I've just managed to win 4 games (out of 6) with them in MBBL Season 2 beating Dwarves, Necro, Norse and High Elf. It seems the important thing is to play very flexibly and use your blitzers to full advantage.
Martyn
[Edit: Further thought made me move lizardmen and orcs further up my list... I remember how well I found lizardmen played early on against me!]
1.Dwarf

8.Orc
9.High Elf

DaImp, I'm disappointed to note you rated Chaos above the Amazons!
The best to worst teams in this humble author's opinions are:
1 - Orc
2 - Wood Elf
3 - High Elf
4 - Dwarf
5 - Undead
6 - Skaven
7 - Amazon
8 - Chaos
9 - Human
10 - Dark Elf
11 - Chaos Dwarf
12 - Lizardman
13 - Norse
14 - Goblin
15 - Halfling
My reasons for rating the top five are:
Orcs are the best all-round team in my opinion (I've seen it in our League). They can stand up to the thumping teams, whilst at the same time - can play the running game.
Wood and High Elves are fast. End of story.
Dwarves have the best starting Lineman position amongst all the teams. In addition, they can take more than a few hard knocks without even flinching. (My favourite team to play at present)
Finally, Undead have Regenerate - perfect for Leagues. Essentially, your players have staying power against most odds... Plus the mummies really kick ass! (In effect - up to two Big Guys who can use team Rerolls)

i think the fact that nobody seems to have similar lists is a testament to the overall balance of most of the teams. I think generally everyone of course recognizes the last 2 as gobs and flings. Beyond that it's all conjecture.
I would however list the top 5 as so:
Wood Elves
Orcs
Dwarves
Skaven
Undead
But you could make all kinds of arguments about all kinds of other teams. The other thing is it depends a LOT on factors outside simple "race". Type of coach, type of league, house rules, etc.

I agree with Zombie that the lists should be specific to short (out-of-the-box and tourney setting), medium and long-term playing.
Too lazy to compile a list of my own now, however.

Balrog, that probably answers a question I was wanting to ask..
not aimed at anyone in particular, but you, Zombie, Iwilliams,7th Duke, Dep Dawg etc are all rated as exp players and I'm not....
but, I notice none of you rate the human team very well and yet (I think I'm right in saying) that a Human won a big GW tourn't in the uk not so long ago. A few lges here in the Uk have web sites and I have been looking at them last few weeks... and humans are often right up there at the top or well placed.
why is that when the exp players dont rate em? (and I note you all rate orcs highly and Iwillams was highest place at 18 wiv them in tha T'mt?)
just curious...

First tier teams: will become great even with a mediocre coach/bad luck
Chaos - Forced retirement of Chaos teams after 2 seasons is common
Woodelves - 1 turn score, block dodge combo for lineman
Skaven - 1 turn score, fast/expendable lineman, mutations
Undead - Running or passing game available at all times
Second teir: can become unstoppable with the right luck/coach
Amazons- block dodge skill combo
Humans - All around potential, but low stats
Dwarfs - Low stats but can get really thumpy
Orks - high stats, player longevity, lots of play options
Dark Elves - The coach's BB team, can do everything fairly well.
High Elves - High stats, but slow
Third Teir: Need a lot of luck and some good coaching to dominate
Chaos Dwarfs - Hobgoblins will aways suck
Lizard Men - Advantages neutralized by Dwarf/Human teams
Khemri Undead - Slow
Norse - Weakest team other than goblins and halflings
Shit teams:
Halflings - Treemen can get halflings into the semi's from time to time.
Goblins - Can be fun to play if your troll is lucky with the casualties
