Picking special play cards instead of random selection.

Post by bobafettsmum »

Just wanted to get an idea of how many leagues out there allow special play cards and of those that do whether they randomly select the cards or allow coaches to pick which ones they want?

Also it'd be good to know what coaches in general think about picking special play cards over the random selection. Cheers.

I have no problems with the cards if they are being used as per the rulebooks suggestion i.e. pick a deck, pay the cost, choose a card at random

If I was commissioning a league I don't think I would ever let someone pay the base cost and pick a single card at that cost, there's too much variation in the level of advantage the cards give for a given team at a given cost.

In both my league and tournaments, you pick the deck, pay per card, but draw at random.

Being able to pick the exact card is a bit too good. If you want a sure thing, take a Babe or a Star Player.

Besides that, drawing a card at random means every game is quite a bit different. If you'd pick a chosen card, you'd pick the same all the time as soon as you've made up your mind.

This is what we do in our league.

To enhance variation, we've decided to mix the cards with the same cost. You then draw a random card within given price range but are allowed a random redraw, if you so choose. Second card must be kept.

We do this in the GBBL league, without the random redraw. Mainly because (as commissioner) I find the 50k card decks unbalanced. Dirty Tricks and Miscellaneous Mayhem are way stronger than the other two; noone picks from the latter as a result.

Agree. Everybody always picked Dirty Tricks in our league before.
The random redraw was introduced to even out the odds of getting a useful card.

Allowed, random pick only. Wouldn't allow buying specific cards.

Allowed but rarely used in our current leagues. Currently contemplating House Ruling the card costs to make them more attractive. Wouldn't allow picking of specific cards as some are overpowered for card value, which is fine when balanced by the risk of random draw.

We allow chosen deck, but random draw. Cards like trampoline trap are basically as potent as a wizard against certain teams.

Dirty Tricks is considered (locally) the more reliable of the 50k card decks and so we rarely see the others get any use. The ideas earlier in this thread about mixing all four 50k decks together and allowing a mulligan is interesting.

Picking special play cards instead of random selection.

We seem pretty standard with picking the deck but random draw, they're not used a lot because they're not great value but they are fun and are often picked just because they are so random.

Being able to pick would be too strong as the cards are more or less useful based on the teams playing, some would just never get used too.

I prefer random skill development too though so maybe I just like things mixed up.
