So... the Blood Bowl books...
I've read the first and the last one (Blood Bowl and Rumble In The Jungle) and I'm on chapter two of Dead Ball and I quite like the stories but man I can't get over the stupid names for Matt Forbecks characters. I mean Slechtes Zauberer... Lästiges Mädchen... really? A main character named Dunk (or Dunkel)?
I really wish Matt had used different names especially since he did use the original names for the other teams like the Chaos All Stars.

I absolutly agree!!!
I guess it bothers german speaking readers most though, since he uses german words for most of his names. Example? Dunks horse is named "Pferd", which translates to "horse". "Lästiges Mädchen" is "Annoying Girl" and so forth.

The names of the characters is your biggest issue with those books?

Re: So... the Blood Bowl books...
There seems to be a lot of hate for Forbeck's BB novels. I must admit, I quite enjoyed them. (Admittedly, it's been quite a few years since I read them.)
Are the names silly? Yes, but ain't the star player names in the rules books equally silly? I don't find "pferd" to be a more silly name for a horse than "Deeproot Strongbranch" is for a treeman. To me, the BB universe is a place of silliness. A tongue-in-cheek take on both the Warhammer universe mixed with the real world of American Football (e.g. Nuffle being the pronouciation of NFL, or Cabalvision being... Well, I guess that one's pretty obvious.
)
Anyway, I'd happily recommend Forbeck's books. Don't expect litterature on a high level (but you probably shouldn't expect that from most Black Library books). Expect lots of enjoyable silliness. Thematically; expect Terry Pratchett meets Warhammer.

Not I know the post above this one is taking the mickey - it has to be, to have "Pratchett" and "Forbeck" in the same vein...

I think I understand what you mean - the Forbeck books present a parody of the real world in a fantasy setting, much like Pratchett's Discworld is a parody of the real world in a fantasy setting.el Superbeasto wrote:I did say thematically!Darkson wrote:Not I know the post above this one is taking the mickey - it has to be, to have "Pratchett" and "Forbeck" in the same vein...

Well, you can say what you want about Forbecks writing, BUT names is something he could have done better...Darkson wrote:This. Wish I could get the hours back I wasted on reading this trash.lunchmoney wrote:The names of the characters is your biggest issue with those books?

Were they great literature? No. It wasn't supposed to be. Were they fun to read? Hell yeah.
If you think you can do better, please try. We need more Blood Bowl fiction out there.

I fully agree!mzukerman wrote:Were they great literature? No. It wasn't supposed to be. Were they fun to read? Hell yeah.
And just to be constructive for a moment: over at the bloodbowlblog.com you can find some fan fiction called "Taking it back". It's definitly worth checking it out. Lots of fan love with a couple of good ideas and only very little naming issues towards the end

I enjoyed reading it and you can give your feedback after reading it.

Re: So... the Blood Bowl books...
I have all 5 books and they kinda get the same theme going. Dunk meet a member of his family, they play blood bowl.
Simples
As for literacy I wish I hadn't lost my gcse short story.
It was blood bowl meets Pratchett meets heavy metal songs.
Got me an A, but lost it about 9 years ago
All ways wanted to write another and did kinda start but never got the time.
Maybe someday.
