Experience with Custom Dice

Post by PercyTheTroll »

I'm thinking of getting some custom dice made for my gaming group and I was wondering what experiences people have had with custom dice.

Particularly, how much detail can be put into a design and how much of that detail will show once the dice are cut. I'm designing in AutoCAD so the lines are just lines, does anyone know how thick the lines will be when they're actually cut into the dice?

Thanks in advance :)

I can't give you a measurement, but fairly fine lines are possible. If anything, it's large areas of positive space that tend to get a somewhat grainy look around the edges.

I've used them a few times, here is a pic of some Block dice I had made a couple of years back.

However last time I used them they printed the image onto a flat side rather than lasering them in. It still looked good but wasn't what I was after, not sure if it was a mix up or if their service has changed. The red pearl ones look awesome by the way. One thing to note was they did insist that you supply a Vector graphic, I couldn't do this with my image manipulation software but found a site that let me change a jpg into it for free (the offer was only for 2 uses though, otherwise you had to pay).

Dice.co.uk could not accommodate the detail in my design, as evidenced by the (free) proof they provided. I was told that:
What you have to remember is although the artwork looks great on the screen, reduced down to fit within a 13.5mm circle, images can become merged. A simpler image would be better. Let me know how you’d like to proceed.
I went with Q-Workshop instead, and they were able to handle my specifications. The downside is that the process took FOREVER (to be fair, they were in the middle of fulfilling a very large order for Privateer Press) and the price was rather high. That price included the customization of all 6 faces, though. In fact, at the time they required you to have an original design for each face.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll see what Chessex UK have to say, I suspect that Q Workshop are too pricey based on what you say (shame though because their dice are beautiful).

I found going direct to Chessex US worked out a lot cheaper. I got 200 dice, and got it for half the price by ordering direct from the US (even taking p&p into account).
In all fairness, the gent at Chessex UK suggested that route to me.
