VoodooMike tell us your tale

Post by voyagers_uk »

Sir,

What got you into BB?
How long have you played it?
What race is you personal favourite? Is that choice determined by historic performance or play style?

Have you only played online or tournaments or both?

Favourite tournament?

Any local league stories you care to share?

Tell us about the real you

The irony of telling me to shut up and trying to organize people to avoid talking to me on the one hand, and then starting a thread specifically to talk about me on the other. Oh well, here goes.
voyagers_uk wrote:What got you into BB?
I like games. I liked fantasy-themed games like Dungeons and Dragons, and using minis for those games. BB was an interesting idea so I picked up a copy of the game when I saw it in the store for the first time, and picked up a team to paint, and away we went. The short answer is "whim" as it is any time you ask someone what got them into a leisure activity.
voyagers_uk wrote:How long have you played it?
Lets see... about 20 years maybe? My first BB league was in university, set up with a group of guys from the engineering faculty. We each selected a different race (I think two people played Chaos) bought all the necessary minis, painted them up, and played organized seasons in which the teams carried over... at least at first. There was a slight attrition problem associated with my team having a bad reputation for causing deaths.
voyagers_uk wrote:What race is you personal favourite? Is that choice determined by historic performance or play style?
For the longest time I played Undead - it was the first roster I chose, and the first team I have painted up, and I had a great time playing them. I relied heavily on regeneration to keep my team going while extensively fouling the other teams to take their non-regenerating players out of the game (and league). The good 'ol days when you got SPP for foul-related casualties. In the past my choice of team was based solely on aesthetics... as time went on it became more about performance. In more recent years I'm prone to playing Chaos Dwarfs or Skaven - teams that have decent long-term performance, but have good up-front performance as well. If I played in a loooong term league I'd play Chaos.
voyagers_uk wrote:Have you only played online or tournaments or both?
I've played online a-plenty, and I've played offline leagues with friends. I don't take part in regional tournaments. I don't have a lot of interest in getting together with people I don't know to play board games - online is much better for that, for me, as it is less of a time and effort commitment for the same sort of activity.
voyagers_uk wrote:Tell us about the real you
Tell you what about the real me? I'm a 38 year old software designer with a degree in psychology (and, if I bothered to do one more semester of university, I'd have one in both biochemistry and computer science as well). I'm married and a father of a very precocious 5-year-old girl. I've worked for the petroleum industry and as an analyst for both the canadian and US governments, though now I mostly just write stuff that I think is fun, as my financial adviser says I'm where he'd like me to be by age 55.

Fun facts: I was educated in private schools run by the Jesuits, but am an avowed Atheist (and was at the time, too). I have ended the life of another human being, though in a rather undramatic fashion (euthanasia, not murder... though depending on your beliefs, the two may be the same thing). I am on a couple of watch-lists due to past association with members of ethnic extremist groups in different countries, though I am not a member of any such groups and do not share their beliefs. I usually vote conservative (small c... though in my country I do vote for the Conservative Party in federal elections, for now). I oppose the death penalty, but not on moral grounds... I'd simply like criminals to have something left to lose after they kill a cop or a child, and are holding hostages. I'm a cat person. As a birth defect (feature!) the tops of my ears are slightly folded, making them look pointy.

Does that cover all the bases for you?

Creepy.. I did mention I'm married, right? That said, who am I to keep you from your fetish.. here's me at the computer, and salmon fishing, for variety.

VoodooMike tell us your tale

I am not organizing people to not talk to you Mike, in fact I am hoping that by encouraging this thread and others like it we can start to grow the community feel again here which has been sadly lacking since LRB 6.0 was locked down and nothing much followed and people started to drift away to country specific forums. Thanks for being so forthcoming on your Game history.

Who should we ask to volunteer next? Burgun put down the popcorn and start a thread

The sooner we establish threads and get to know each other better the less likely we are to lose the plot when we disagree

Thanks again mike

Good response, and 1 I didn't expect TBH...

I tend to lurk rather than post on threads that are not directly linked to my BB "world" as they often leave my intellect level behind quickly.

For some reason I thought youde be taller :D

I expected you to ignore this thread so props to you for posting up. I'm glad you posted pics as well - you're not actually Sheldon Cooper ;)
Thats not meant to be insulting BTW, I am mostly entertained by your presence on this board.

Well this thread has taken a surprising turn. I saw it just as a thread of people baiting VoodooMike, but it seems to have taken a turn for the better. Well done Mike.
