Minotaur teams?

Post by Gronlokk »

Having just read the notorious 4th edition (or Gold edition?) rules for the first time, I am very glad that they have been superseded by far superior rules.

But there was something in there that sounded really intriguing to me: rules for Minotaur teams...
As I always play the game for the fun and not really for the competition, I've opted to field an Ogre team in my first ever season a couple of years ago. I've even created a couple of "hats" made out of paper strips to put over the ogres' heads whenever they suffered from bone-headed and had a blast with my unreliable ogres and frail snotlings. And a terrible W/L/D ratio :D

Therefore, a team made up of nothing but minotaurs sounds pretty interesting on paper. Has anybody ever tried something like that using 4th edition rules or in any other ruleset? Would it be possible (and/or sensible) to do so with the current rules?

I've looked into this myself, simply using an Ogre team and swapping out the Ogres for Minotaurs. The biggest issue here is Wild Animal. Ogres fail any action due to Bonehead 17% of the time. Minotaurs fail any block/blitz action 17% of the time AND non-block/blitz actions 50% of the time. Over the course of the game, a Minotaur team is going to burn through re-rolls and then find that half of its Minotaurs are going to be standing around bellowing impotently.

I just can't see how you make a workable team with that much Wild Animal, which is a shame, because I've got lots of Minotaurs I could use!

Actually, wild animal worked differently back then (that's why it was changed). Minotaur teams actually first appeared in BB Compendium 1 and wild animal was very OP (it was toned down a bit in 4ed and later changed in LRB to what we have now).
In BBComp1, WA player had to always go first (only really mattered if WA BG was used as an ally on another team) and had to block the nearest opponent (or foul if the nearest was prone). On a roll of a 1, the WA player went berserk and blitzed the nearest player (friend or foe) and could never receive assists on blocks or fouls. The berserk part was removed in 4ed, so always had to move first, had to block nearest opponent, and couldn't receive assists. Also was considered to have frenzy as part of WA.
So, back in 3ed (using BBComp rules) or 4ed, mino teams were quite OP, wild animal wasn't very negative, especially compared to BH or RS.
With the changes to WA, it wouldn't make sense to have a whole team of minos now.

Minotaur teams: they lose loner and gain Pro.

Ogres that fail become squares around which you dance. Minotaurs will still trip dancers up. That is not so impotent.

It sound worth a try with CRP rules. They sound like Bully Ogres, because they will better hit anything than just move.

Good point :-) One other downside (compared to ogres) is the lack of throw team mate, meaning plan A is the only plan!

Ogres have no Loner either. So maybe Minotaur teams should lose Loner and get TTM.

Who would they throw? I'm not familiar with the old team - did they have other player types?

I think they were talking about subbing Minotaurs for Ogres on the Ogre team. So they would throw snotlings.

Snotlings wouldn't feel very "minotaurish".
I would prefer Minotaur teams to have appropriate stunties.
I mad a Minotaur team with nogors, but I'm not finding it right now.
If I find it I will post it.

Have them throw dwarf slayers. You would need to give them right stuff. On a 1 the mino tears the slayer in half instead of throws him. The added bonus is ALL the players have frenzy.

In case you have not noticed this is not serious.

If you cannot stall out for an 8 turn drive to score with dwarves then you need to go and play canasta with your dad..if you can find him.

Thanks a lot for all the replies so far!

I am seriously thinking about trying this with slightly modified rules for Wild Animal. Now about the miniatures... Any good minos out there? I think I remember GW's minotaurs being quite ugly.

If Minotaurs will get Throw Team Mate in this team, they should definitely get Really Hungry!

This thread started out asking about the old BBcomp/4ed mino team, but wound up discussing how to house rule a team to fit the current rule set.

This should be moved to the house rules area.
