Using Dreadball models in Blood Bowl

Post by worthy »

Since GW has stopped making/selling Blood Bowl teams, i've been lookng on Amazon for alternatives when I spotted these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/DreadBall-HE491 ... =Dreadball

2 boxes of them should make a good Dwarf team for in-house games, but I have a few questions:

1) How big are the Dreadball models compared to Blood Bowl models? (because if these Dwarves are bigger than a Blood Bowl Orcs then it's pointless).

2) In the link above, which models would match which BB Position? (ie; Forge Father Strikers as Blood Bowl Dwarf Blitzers?)

3) How is this for Grim Ironjaw the Dwarf Star player: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dreadball-Yurik ... =Dreadball ?

Also what other Dreadball teams would make good BB proxys because i've spotted these aswell - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mantic-Games-HE ... =Dreadball for Skaven?

The Dreadball figures are smaller than most BB minis available. They are a much more realistic 28mm compared to the super sized, exaggerated 30-35mm models that have become the norm. However, they're too "tech" for my tastes on a BB pitch.

They tend to be normal or small, no scale creep. The problem with the Forge Fathers is that all the positions are pretty similar, at least for my taste, you have to pay lots of attention to the shoulder pads to know what they are. But they have knees! Got some in the CD queue, where they all would be blockers or one half of the centaurs. Also think about getting the boosters instead of the base boxes twice.

Also look at their plastic range, if you like to spend time cutting, sometimes even sculpting (damn integrated shields). Or the Avatars of War for the slayers. Some used only AoW to make the full team, by armouring the base models.

They are, as Mantic tends to be, slightly smaller. No bad thing if buying a whole team, but slightly annoying if trying to match bitz.

For my taste I agree, they are a bit too 'sci fi', but I am considering the Judwan Pelgar Mystics as a Slann alternative, given that they are supposed to be 'space aliens' anyway?

Mantics packaging is poor - there are enough sculpts now to have a diverse team, but split over 2 sets which sucks as you end up with a lot of duplicates.

Really, 1 team set, 1 stars set per race, core games, extra expansion, then their other stuff. Cut down the codes and complexity and make the packs better value.

The dwarves could do, but how to get matching slayers? In general dreadball races have too few positional types as well. You could do a hi tech halfling team or some kind of space vampire set, or other non standard teamm like pact or underworld. Maybe a mix ofhuman male and female teams could make something as well.

Thanks for all the advice guys and i'm not fussed about the Sci-Fi look (I even play Dungeon Bowl on a Space Crusade board).

yes, you get duplicates, but you should also consider the price. At the beginning I was also complaining about this issue, but comparing the price to other similar products...

I think that Teratons and dozer are awesome (and unexpensive) as sauri.
Now I need some skinks that match...

Using Dreadball models in Blood Bowl

Post by Shteve0 »

Hi guys

The dreadball minis are indeed pretty small, with the exception of the dwarves and the rats.

Here's a link to a plog I really should get round to updating. It's relevant to this conversation as I used bits from the Avatars of War berserker kit to BB-ise my dreadball forge fathers (wip pics, team shot and size comparison in the link). I also used the judwan as slann, funnily enough :)

Thanks for posting that link because i've not been on this forum for over a year and that practically answers alot of questions (especially the can it be done question). Plus they are some great examples of Dreadball BB teams.

BTW I like your dwarf team on there, especially the TrollSlayer giving the middle finger, lol!
