The ageing rule.

Post by NightDragon »

Back to my old favourite! Do all you guys who play the latest version of BB use all the rules even if you don't like them? And the rules in the latest handbook, are they the most up to date?

The latest rules are available from GW's Site - follow the "Living Rule Book" links.

I think leagues vary a lot in the rules they use. None of the ECBBL leagues are using rulebook ageing this season.

The LRB 2.0 Version of the rules are the most up to date rules for BB. And for most (at least on this forum) and my own, they are the best to date.

As to using all the rules even if I do not like them, no I do not. I am Commish for a table top league that has run pretty constantly for the last 2-3 years. We really dislike the new handicap table. We still use the old handicap table (cards and mvps) as it adds zanyness to the game. We also use SPPs for fouling (oops opened up a big old can of worms there). That said I am mostly happy to house rule these changes without the official rules reflecting them. My league plays a certain style that isn't for everyone.

Most people who reply will probably say something similar. That is, that they use house rules, not that they change the exact same stuff. In fact those two main house rules of ours probaby set us a great deal apart from alot of other leagues.

We use LRB 2.0 but with kicking and secret weapon rules added. And some new teams too. Although some rules are not perfect it makes running the league smoother if you can use the rulebook as is.

We use LRB 2.0 too with almost no changes (we are not too strict about moving the turncounter). It makes playing in tournaments easier, if you do not have too many house rules.
As for ageing, it always hurts, but it helps to balance the game.

I forgot to add that some rules are housed because they are just foolish otherwise. I always misread the intercept rule and so played it that the pass roll was made first (made sense to me ) . When I realised my error I left it anyway as to have to roll before the ball is even in the air is stupid.

Also the other main gripe I have is with forced catch. The random nature of the bouncing ball versus the forced pick up, where it is always a choice to move onto it leads to problems in the game for the sake of "consistency". We did try it out for about 10 games but it caused too many unfair and (more importantly) unenjoyable situations and turnovers to be left in.

My friends and I really want to stick 100% to the LRB 2.0 as we know what havoc it creates when you open doors for too much houserules (everyone wants something to be changed = endless discussions).

But we decided on some changes:

1. We just pushed the ageing roll on row down, that means you start rolling for age with your 2nd skill, everything else remains. We do not like the idea of people possibly getting minuses for their first skill (most linemen never get more anyway)
2. Pass procedure: Pass roll - interception roll - catch roll
3. All skills have to be declared before the dice get rolled (PO, MB, DT etc.)

that's all

we play by the rules all the way. ( well we try sometimes we miss somethign and fix it) Like at the begining of the league we didn;t notice the rule change on fouling. Liekly no one got a casultiy by fouling yet( 1st games of the league) I mean some of the rules may hurt my team but the will balance them for everyone

We at Bubble use LRB with three exeptions:

1 No TO for forgetting the turn marker
2 You HAVE to put all players on the pitch if you have 11 less than 11 players available for this drive
3 Slightly different Handicap Table (Actually the same but not with absolute differences but with the Ratio)

We will have Secret weapons and some more teams soonish

My league, the RMBL, doesn't use ageing at all, mostly because the LRB version bites. But we are trying to make our own system to replace it.

I wasn't too sure about ageing (though again, we try to stick to LRB) till last night when my wight reached 16spp and went down to strength 2 :pissed: Now I like the principle of aging (ie veterans of many a match may pick up some slight wear and tear) but it can affect you WAAAY too soon.

Take this:

1st game with a new orc team:

Blizter got 2 touchdowns, then got SI. Result: Niggling Injury, miss next game.

Rolled skill: Normal Skill: Aging: 2 :pissed:

Result of aging: another Niggling Injury.

So, after my 1st game ever with my orcs, I had a Blizter missing next game, and going into game 3 with Tackle and 2 Niggling Injuries.

It really sucks seeing N,N,MNG in the "Injury" column
