Re: DreadBall - The Futuristic Sports Game
By the way, beta versions of the 4 Season 3 rosters have been released by Jake on his website quirkworthy.com. They are:
Teratons (bashy team without Strikers and with the ability to Teleport 4 hexes)
Asterians (weedy Space-Elves with abilities to get opponents sent off, excellent Strikers)
"Nameless" (perhaps the most bashy team yet, as they have 3+ Strength Guards combined with Gotcha! players = doubled Threat hexes, they also have extremely good Strikers)
Zees (useless but supremely annoying monkeys who love to foul and are very difficult to send off)
I have not played any test games with these teams yet. At first glance, it looks like a good old fashioned dose of GW-style "army list inflation" or power creep. The one joke team (Zees) may be quite a bit better than intended by the designer. Only time will tell.
The league here in Christchurch seems to be dying (just 4 coaches). There has not been a game for a month. I will probably attempt a re-launch once the S3 team rosters are confirmed,
All the best.

Re: DreadBall - The Futuristic Sports Game
In my area we have gone from 4 coaches in our first league to 9 in our second. The game has been going very strong with great support from our LGS and our players supporting their LGS as well.
Over all feeling is Dreadball will be around in my area for a while as it is a fun game to play.

Re: DreadBall - The Futuristic Sports Game
Is Dreadball actually any good? I've read through a lot of this thread and it seems there are balance issues with some of the newer teams especially, but bits of it sound fun.
It also seems a bit of a BB ripoff reading the rules (the turnover rule especially). Does it stand on its own two feet or on the shoulders of the giant that is BB?
Would be interested to hear what BB vets think, is it worth laying down a chunk of change for DB or should I just get myself a couple more BB teams?

Re: DreadBall - The Futuristic Sports Game
Go look at Zlurpee forums. Several guys have been to tournements. Johnny P is starting a league in the Chicago area. I've heard they are addressing the Judwan balance issues. In season 3 rules maybe. If the game steals rules it did so from Elfball. Those two have a lot in common. BB not so much, but the BB crowd is convinced that all other sports games are BB ripoffs. Personally I think Mantic wanted the BB players, and they are getting them, but DB itself stands on it's own, ie it is not a BB ripoff at all. It may be an Elfball ripoff, but that cannot be proven. Most of the BB crowd never gave EB more then a glance. Try to play EB like BB and you will lose. They just do not play the same. I have all three.

As far as vets are concerned contact Xtreme, Johnny P, and/or Valdric. All three have played BB forever, run the biggest BB tourneys in the USA, are very active in the BB comunity, and all three are playing DB. I hear a lot of good comments from them.

Re: DreadBall - The Futuristic Sports Game
It definitely stands on its own feet. I tend to think of it as Dreadball is to Checkers as Blood Bowl is to Chess. It's not a perfect analogy but it's close enough. Dreadball is simpler and also completely different from Blood Bowl.jdmofo wrote:It also seems a bit of a BB ripoff reading the rules (the turnover rule especially). Does it stand on its own two feet
Yes, I have also heard that changes are coming in the Season 3 book that deal with the Judwan overpowered problem.
Turnovers: actually Dreadball is more lenient in what causes a turnover compared to BB. The main thing is failing to catch a ball. Failing to Evade (aka Dodge) won't cause it, or falling down after a Dash (aka GFI). There may be other examples, but I'm always pleasantly surprised when screwing up during my own turn doesn't end it.
Edit: forgot to mention that I hate the layout of the main rulebook. Some rules are in obscure places or spread across many pages when they should be consolidated. I've had to write in page references throughout so I can find what I'm looking for mid-game. It's not a total deal-breaker by any stretch, but it doesn't make learning the game easy at first.

Oh I like it. DRC!
Version 1.1 is now live:
* Added The limited edition Gabe model stats, amended the MVP names to show positions (In brackets), added current Season 1 & 2 MVPs to the Season 3 Beta teams and added new columns to track 1 & 2 point scores as well as calculating total points scored by each.

Needs more salt.
Plus needs to be able to include effects of Freezer Burns, such as loss of skills and stats.
