Rat Ogre or Glart Smashrip?

Post by nonumber »

Having a few tourneys under my belt with the rats now and with a pretty standard win/loss ratio as you can see in my signature (which took a massive dig after my 2-0-4 at Gert Bowl last weekend! Not to mention my CR...) I'm considering my future with rats. I'll be turning to Undead at some point but I may yet have another couple of tourneys with Skaven and so I thought I'd throw this poll out to the board and see what the results were.

I have previously taken both of these players but at a 110 tournament that means only three gutters and 1 re roll. Really coming at the cost of some of your scoring ability.

Now I'm thinking of taking one or the other and they both have their merits. For those unfamiliar or just as a recap here are their individual stats.

Rat Ogre - 150.000
6 5 2 8
Loner, Frenzy, Mighty Blow, Prehensile Tail, Wild Animal

Glart Smashrip - 210.000
7 4 3 8
Loner, Block, Claw, Juggernaut

So which would you pick?

My record got better when I stopped taking the Rat Ogre or Stars.

Any idea why? What changed in your play?

Not played at a tournament but I think rogres are a big bag of fail, and cost 3 linos...which you will need. I suspect stars are the same, but as I say, I have not tried.

If you cannot stall out for an 8 turn drive to score with dwarves then you need to go and play canasta with your dad..if you can find him.

Forget about the rat ogre, he just isn't worth it. If you feel you need muscle go with Glart, at least he comes with block and claw. Personally I wouldn't take either of them as they cost too much.

Probably this:

I personally found I tried to do too much with the RO, to the detriment of the rest of the team, and if you play safe with him (by not Blocking/Blitzing) you're not getting your money's worth from him.
Same with Stars (though I haven't used Glart at a tourney) - you need to use them to get the cost's worth, but using them more often that not comes to bite you in the ass, especially with Loner.

Have you tried using Skitter Stab-stab? That MA9 shadowing can really mess up your opponents plan.

Skitter Stab-Stab is secret option #3 in some ways. I used him last tournament and although I didn't take advantage of shadowing, a few Wardancers and Ghouls got knifed up real good.

I can see that being a problem. I've typically been using the Rogre to tie things up but with Wild Animal you really do reduce the mobility.

For those who have never used Glart, I find him pretty useful. ST 4 makes him a great blitzer and block skill reduces the loner risk. Claw has its moments and on further thought juggernaut is a plus for helping with one turners. The other thing that's great about Glart is that he's a dimension of a Skaven team few are used to playing against so he's a worry for the opposition.

I will consider taking neither, perhaps using Stab Stab instead.

personally I LOVE the Rat Ogre and I wouldn't go to a tournament without one, assuming I'm taking skaven.
He's a very good cage-breaker and you don't have to move him when he's in a good position .. just keep him there ..

the claw bloke is also nice but I'd personally go with a RO

Not sure about him for a Skaven team, but he is great for Underworld.

Hit and miss. Can sometimes take out 2 or more opposition players in his first turn. Other times will take himself out in his first block.

Take Glart like whoever said it. Wild Animals just aren't worth it. If you take away scoring potential you are ruining the skaven and what can make you lose the game.

You just need an opponent so determined to get "Longest completed pass" that you get gifted two touchdowns
