I’m sure someone very wise once extolled the virtues of simplicity... Too many layers of complexity (teams, multiple races, racial groups) runs the risk of becoming bloated. I’d like to see how the double-race system works in its own right before I think of mixing it up with tribes.

Also, I don’t want to discourage newer players with too many additional rules. The stuff I do for Monkeybowl is probably close to the line in this regard. Plus I’m concerned that some casual players won’t actually have two teams to rub together let alone several to choose from. So I don’t want to see newbies with only one team getting picked on by the guy with all 24 teams - most of them probably in his car boot ready to be deployed at 09:59 Saturday morning ;-)

While I'm mulling it over, I do still need a fitting subtitle. Currently toying between these two:

Monkeybowl: DOUBLETAKE!
Monkeybowl: THE POWER OF TWO!

YES, THE CAPITALS ARE IMPORTANT!!

Love this idea! The team aspect is a lot of fun but as you say we don't want to over-egg the pudding. It's probably best to leave it as a singles event if this ruleset is to flourish, at least at first.

Note - looks as though the individual tiebreaker has Scotland as 5th and Blackshirts as 4th (when it was in fact the other way round).

Not sure why, but suspect the team bonus points were somehow missed here on the spreadsheet. Blackshirts and Scotland both got 27 points from wins alone but Scotland scored 4 bonus points to The Blackshirts 2.

So Valen should have been 10th (with Geggster 11th). Shaheen should have been 22nd (with Vmcat 23rd).

Hardly makes any difference but just to set the record straight!! :)

(Thanks Gav for pointing this out  )

Is Marleys Angels playing Tean Cack twice correct Pip?

It most certainly is. When working out the draw for round 5, Nipples couldn't find any way of giving every team a brand new opponent so decided the best route was to make one of the match-ups at the bottom of the draw a duplicate.

Had we played a new team at that point it would have been one of the teams in contention to win, and throwing that team us would have been unfair on the other teams in with a shot; better that they competed amongst themselves.
So we got thrown to Bren's team a second time to aid him in his glorious sprint towards 6-0 and an individual win.

And that went well for Bren.

I quite like the idea of different rosters within the same race, but with free choice of when they can be used. There is enough variation within the Monkeybowl races and skills to make this interesting. Could be picked after seeing who you are facing, as in Warmachine. Perhaps an idea for another tournament.

0) Gutted to have missed this years MB
1) Loving the Multi race idea
2) Keep it simple though and try without team aspect.... for now ;-)
3) Maybe consider tweaking the Tiers? Seems from history it's always the max Tier 1 teams that do best
4) Sorry to hear about the duplicate round....... but now you appreciate how tricky it is for Eurobowl. Especially after Scotland had lost to the other bottom 6 teams

If Tribes returns I may alter the bonus points to encourage lower tier races a little more. But I think I'm happy with the roster selection rules. They incentivise selection of weaker races but don't bring them level with tier 1, quite deliberately.

Feedback appreciated all round. I've finally decided Monkeybowl IX will be an individual tournament using the 'Doubletake' gimmick. Watch this space for more info ;-)

Just as a massive tangent - what is it about Score that won't allow us to sort out a final round swiss draw at the touch of a button, rather than have the stress / time input of working it out ourselves?

I'm not pretending I know the first thing about coding a tournament tracking program, and I have no inclination to learn. But if a tournament wanted to run a prettier bit of software like Geoff's or Nippy's, fair enough (and pats on the back all around for putting the effort into writing something), but isn't it trivial to set Score going in parallel just to sort out a round 6 / 7 swiss at the touch of a button? I've only used it once or twice, but it seems easy enough to just list teams as single coaches and add bonus points as appropriate, even if it doesn't support full team swiss within swiss stuff (although the release notes seem to indicate it does, it can't or we'd be using it, correct?).

I'm clearly ignorant (and please point it out!) because this must be a conversation we've previously had before embarking on writing our own stuff. But even if it's a bit of a frig to run a tournament via scamming Score into thinking a bloke called 'England' has beaten a bloke called 'Germany' 6-3 to satisfy the tournament bonus points, if it removes the TO having to think going into R6 after a long weekend, it's worth it? It sounds pretty inelegant now I've written it down, like using blu-tac to keep your car together, but if it works...

Reading that through, it seems critical if you read it in the wrong way, but I promise that I'm just interested, rather than being critical.

Yes I more than half considered this, just didn't get round to implementing it. Sexed up spreadsheet plus Score would've worked well together.

If and when TRIBES returns I'll bear it in mind :)
