Conversion plog: Khemri update! 27/10/12

Post by Shteve0 »

Oh, quick plug for the ausbowl crew's indigogo campaign. Awesome, well priced dice!

Note the highest level matches my colour scheme - its a coincidence, but a happy one at that. I so look forward to the day all my teams have matching block dice sets :)

I like your conversions, and you've done a good job painting them up. My one critique would be that the yellow isn't a distinct enough color next to the color of their bones, which draws your eyes away and sort of "hides" the bone colored areas. It's a shame, because it's a nice touch which takes them from "necrons with skull heads" to "skeletons in armor". Maybe there are some deeper tones you might use to make the bone "pop" more?

Thanks Lunchables! I think you're right - so I took the minis over to a mate's house and he very kindly loaned me a few yellows to assist (lithophile - cheers :)). So I've used a sun yellow on all the models and applied a mix of the green and skull white as a highlight. Here's a flash) pic of a handful of the wip models.

Image

This stage, as you'll see, coincided with my first Tomb Guardian getting a lick of paint. I went with the same skin tone as I used on my zombies, but left off the highlighting so as not to get lost in the bandages. And yet... with all that green and yellow in the armour, it feels like I'm trying to find too difficult a mean point between the primary tones.

So, I've tried something totally new and jumped into the skintone I was keeping back for my Slann. I think it looks better as a contrast, but does it sit with the rest of the team? Please help! Any suggestions on which of the green or blue looks better, or is there a more obvious tone I'm missing that will work with this? Obviously I've got a lot of work still to go on the new TG, it's just a palette tester before I go into highlighting, and apologies for dreadful picture quality... I just can't seem to work out how to get the flash to work consistently on my wife's camera! :S

In other news, the Globerotters are now based and varnished. If we get a nice day tomorrow I may try to get some pics! Again, big thanks to lithophile for free use of his modelling supplies!

I really like the colour scheme.
It's very striking, and I'm sure it will work great on the pitch!

Its very good sports on your part to go with the Springboks colours being a Zealander and all...

Great update Shteve0! Your models are looking awesome.

I do have to take the voice of dissent however and say that personally I prefer the green skin tone. It just looks so perfectly rotting to me! Either choice will look great though.

Cheers guys!

I went with the blue in the end, though lightened it slightly to a pale grey as my original effort felt a little too harsh. I quite like the results, so here's a team pic (lots more work to go) to demonstrate the results. Cheers for the help on this, guys - much appreciated!

Image

Barnacle - good spot :) That's my wife's doing in all honesty. He was originally lining up a kind of ninja throat spike pose, but I was inspired to mix it up a little when the missus pointed out that he was almost doing The Bolt! I think it's too late for this team to have a Mobot, but perhaps next time I go to kitbash I'll be able to come up with a reasonable effort. In the meantime, hopefully you'll also enjoy my WIP take on a dirty player on the second row...

Axt - more painfully it's also in the Aussie colours, but I hadn't tweaked when I started. I actually moved over here from the UK only this year, so perhaps I can be excused the oversight!

As for the conversions, the linemen/runners/blitzers are a combo of necron parts with spindly little skeleton arms (I think from wargames foundry) and tomb king "tomb guard" heads, bought on the cheap from a reputable online vendor on the other side of the pacific. The Tomb Guardian's are Willy's, picked up from the good guys over at Impact - thanks Tom!

Anyway, no based pics yet of my undead guys yet, and to be honest I've been slightly distracted by perking up some older conversions I've showcased here before. These figures need some more tidying up and basing, but I wanted to brighten up the team colours a little bit (they were fairly dark originally and have been in a box for three years) and I think the effect works. Heff - you may wish to look away now.

Their bases look great on that cutting mat - It reminds me of an astronomer’s tomb!

The dwarves look great too, have you got any close ups of the chainsaw guy?

Sure thing - though closeups do my painting and modelling skills no favours!

Image

While I'm here, some more progress today, with varnish on three of the four tomb guardians and 9 skeletons (inc all 4 positionals) now essentially finished. I won't post them all again, but here are a couple of close ups... my immensely possessive ball carrier and a non-traditional dirty player, who seems to be far more interested in the contents of his nose and in scratching his arse than whatever's happening elsewhere on the pitch.

Nice work with the Tomb King/Necron combo. I figured you must be a pom because no self respecting Kiwi would paint his team in Aussie colours unless he was a Packer fan also. When can we see based figures - you got an aversion to it? Or are you looking to do it all in one big go for consistencies sake?

Nice dwarf team!
Simple but effective, congrats.
You can tell the positionals apart perfectly, so I guess the modelling skills are just fine!
