Ogre vs. Troll
I'm to the point with my Orc Team where I need to start thinking about which large monster I will be adding to my roster. I was wondering what the thoughts are on a Troll vs. Ogre all other things considered equal (such as team roster, other teams in the league, fan factor, ect..) Could I get some feedback as to which one I should begin saving for?

i always go with the ogre. the extra cost is definintely worth it, regardless of the regen., particularly in lrb where you can't buy off neg traits, you ogres give you the freedom of not having to make sure you've always got a tagalong.

It actually depends on what you want out of a Big Guy on your team.
The Ogre is usually the better choice: It's faster, more agile, and it's only a Bonehead compared to the Really Stupid Troll. The Troll is more resilient though with Regeneration, so it can be a real pain for those opponents who manage to cause an injury, only to see it recover for the next Kick-off!
For a semi-reliable player, pick the Ogre. For a laugh at your own and your opponents expenses, pick the Troll.

I think its more a case of do u really want to throw team mate? If u do buy the ogre if not buy the troll. If u just want someone to stand between 2 black orcs with block , buy the troll

Unless you want a Troll because they look more Orcy then I would always go with the Ogre.
For the extra 20k he is more agile (not really a major issue), faster, not going to eat your goblins, not saddled with really stupid (and so can play on his own as mine often does).
Although the troll can regen and so is almost indestructible it does not have Thick Skull and so may actually spend more time off the pitch than the ogre.
As one of my friends observed, 'sure the Troll can regenerate, but who wants a regenerating piece of crap?'

The short answer is "no", but it is a qualified "no" because there are odd ways of interpreting the question which could justify the answer "yes".

That's not even true. For weak teams, regeneration is better than think skull. But for bashing teams like orcs that rarely play with fewer than 11 players, think skull is a better choice as it lets your player stay on the pitch. So for orc teams, ogres are actually more resilient than trolls.Elfhater wrote:The Troll is more resilient though with Regeneration
There's just no reason whatsoever to take a troll other than fluff. The ogre is better in every aspect except price, but then orcs usually have lots of spare cash, so the price isn't even a concern.

Troll for fluff. Ogre for value.
I am of the opinion that maybe denying Orcs and Goblins access to Ogres would be a good idea - because as things stand NOONE is going to use Trolls.

In my league, there are 2 chaos dwarf teams with a troll (better than a minotaur), one chaos team with a troll (started with it, an ogre would have been too expensive), and a goblin team with 2 trolls (he bought them while ogres were still 240k). There was nobody with an ogre until last week when an orc team hired one.Thadrin wrote:Troll for fluff. Ogre for value.

To Amon: always take the apoth as soon as possible. There is no exception to this rule with any of the 15 races in the game (except of course undead who can't hire one). Your first buy should always be an apoth.

Ogres are better than trolls. However they cost more too.
To my mind the 20k difference pays for 2 things - a much better TTM game and slightly better movement.
Thick Skull vs Regen is a toss up, TS is more tactically useful as you stay on the pitch, regen more strategically useful as it saves you money.
Really Stupid makes little difference as he ought to be in the thick of things anyway.
So if you aren't going to play a TTM game, I'd say a troll shades it on value. Basically you are paying 20k less for S5 MB big guy.

Really Stupid is the main reason I would not buy a Troll, I currently have an Ogre and with this in mind I have been seeing where he ends up on the pitch. I estimate that around 50% of the time he has no support from his teamates.ianwilliams wrote:Really Stupid makes little difference as he ought to be in the thick of things anyway.
Admittedly if I had a Troll I would adjust my tactics to compensate for this but it would reduce my tactical options from what they are now.

Zombie mentions trolls on cdwarves, i must say that is the best team for a troll, especially with the andy hall ruling on blunderbuss. His move isnt any slower than the cd's that will form the rest of the line/cage and they are very likely to still be able to have at least one in btb at the end of the opponents next turn.

Indeed. My chaos dwarves often (maybe 4 or 5 times a game) have to send someone next to him to explain a couple things to the big dummy (called Dumdum btw), effectively wasting a player wo could ave done someting more useful. Really stupid is much worse than i thought before i bought te guy.Munkey wrote:Really Stupid is the main reason I would not buy a Troll, I currently have an Ogre and with this in mind I have been seeing where he ends up on the pitch.
