GAs have really gotten out of hand.
All they're really doing now is declaring someone's intrest in a particular item. If no one else wants it, it's great. Others will step aside and let another TBBer have it and wait till next time. There's plenty of stuff out there. Others let their feelings get hurt and start e-mailing, posting, and PMing all over the place.
GA was never written in stone. It was never a guarantee that you were going to win anything. Sure, we might not bid against you but outsiders sure will. I know that if I backed off because someone I knew was going to bid and he got outbid at some price lower than I was going to go, I'd be pissed.
This GA thing we have going on here is just to unruly to manage. I have never asked for a GA but do state my intents. I have always conceeded or written to a fellow TBBer to see what portion of the lot they're bidding on they were interested in. I will continue to post intent here. I will also continue to inquire what items any other bidders are interested in if I only want part of it. This is what we should be using this board for. The GA is only starting to get people's feelings hurt.
It's an auction. bid what you're willing to pay whenever you like, early, last second, whatever. It's up to you. We can discuss it here before hand if anyone wants but what it is we're doing now doesn't work.

I believe the whole GA thing is to discuss it. Not to say hands off. You post you want a GA but if someone else is going to go higher than you, they can let you now so you don't push the price up on them. What you have in your head is the same idea as me. Its about getting what you want at the lowest price without stepping on other peoples toes.
I have taken part in a number of GAs that have worked fine as far as I know. Some people pm me and said they are interested and which ever party was prepared to go higher was given the go ahead.
I think your just a victim of bad circumstances, I don't know exactly whats happened but I don't think there was any ill thoughts going on.
On the whole I think the system works, its just a matter of patience and communication. Some times things go wrong, that happens. I am sure we are all big and old enough to get over it. They are only little lead miniatures after all ;]

I've been thinking along the same lines for a while. When the GAs started this board was smaller and friendlier.
Maybe it's just too big now..but a 'free-for-all' could well let bad feeling spill over onto the board if members start sniping each other. The whole thing only ever worked on a 'trust' basis anyway, and let's face it, it'd be the easiest thing in the world to set up a different 'anonymous' account.
I think 'something' needs doing, but I'm not sure what.. especially with this many people buying right now...

For myself I noticed that the whole GA thing allerted me on who is bidding. I saw various auctions with TBB'ers having high bis or being busy bidding. If I really want an item I'd get into contact. If I planned on bidding cause I like it and if I win it's OK I will not bid.
As you said, there's plenty to 'go around' and if not there's still PM to work things out.
just my 2 cents

I've just got some guy writing to me all pissed of because I got on HIS auction. I couldn't get on the board so I had no clue what was going on. Then I finally get on and find a whole thread on it and little "help me" messages all over and, the whole time, he never even wrote me to ask "what's up". When he finally does it's to say he's ready to fight me for them. Now he writes me.
sheesh.
Damn, if I'd known they were that important to someone, I'd have never bothered bidding.
There are those that don't understand the whole GA thing, no matter how many posts there are about it. For some it may just be a language barrier, I don't know.
Someone's already said it but I'll say it again. It was only ever a coutesy. Calling it never made anything anyone's personal domain.

Hum, except the small "problem", if there's still one, between snotsngrots and... another TBBer
(pm: dear snots, I guess it seems important for him due to the fact he absolutely want to play with a 2nd edition team in Blood Bowl), I still convinced the GA is a good way to go.
Problem should come from auction habits... Personnally, I never bid before the last 5 minutes... And if I ever asked for 2/3 GA in my whole "existence" on this board, this is the maximum... I mean, it's a fact there are tooo GA actually IMHO. It can't work like it...
ANy ideas, guys?
EDIT: just a word to say snot is a really good guy. No offence meant for the other tbber, but snot is someone you can trust

Thanks DFC. I appreciate that little plug. I try and treat everyone well as I hope several members of this board know already. Sometimes, though, I guess things happen.
I agree, there may be a time for them but I still stand behing my statement that they've gotten out of hand. I just don't have any ideas.
That and I want to go back to sniping.
I'm paying way to much lately.

The GA is a way to resolving who would have paid more for an item so that there's no needless increase in the cost. If you call a GA, it's to announce to everyone how much you'd be willing to pay. Maybe GA's should include that information from the start? When you announce a GA, you also announce how much you'd be willing to pay for it, that way if others want it they can chime in and say how much they'd pay. Last person to chime in then has the GA.
