Not often I disagree with you Torg, but I can't let this one go by. Sorry, doesn't work that way for everyone. The more I try to paint, the more depressed I get, and the more I think of jacking the whole hobby in - sorry, I just HATE painting (which is why PBeM has been a godsend).Torg wrote: I know I didn't like painting much when I started, but the more you do, the better you get and the more you like it.
Now don't get me wrong, I like to see painted teams/armies/dioramas, just don't see it as the be all and end all of the hobby.

I used to do historical wargaming and dioramas, but I got out b/c I could never finish. I love this game b/c I can do just enough painting (11-16) that satisfies the artist in me and then actually get to use them in the game, which satisfies the gamer in me. I have the best of both worlds. I guess that's why I don't mess with wargames anymore, too much painting is a bad thing. I prefer that the figures on the table be painted, but I could care less if the apoth., coaches, cheerleaders, etc. are used. Any fig used in a creative way is what I appreciate, gw in orgin or not. Right now I am painting a couple of extra referees to be head coaches of my human team and dwarf team. I doubt I'll do cheer leaders. An apothecary would be fun though.

I agree with you totally lawquoter, I don't like painting a whole lot of minis at one time (one of the main reasons I never tried 40K or WFB), but painting a team isn't too bad. You don't have to paint 16 at once, just 12 or so when starting out and do the rest as your team grows.
Darkson, when I was decribing painting being more enjoyable the more you do it, I was speaking of my experience not trying to make it a generalisation.

I think it depends on the league. If most of the players paint their teams, but a few don't it can detract from the enjoyment of the majority. I prefer a league that provides bonuses to fully painted teams(or penalties to the unpainted ones). We have had many 40K leagues like that, and afterwards most people prefered it that way. In 40K you need 5-10 times the number of models, but most felt it was worth it. If no one else paints, fine. If you are the only one not painted at least make the effort like everyone else.

I think all leagues should encourage their members to get some appropriate minis and paint them up. Having the game look right makes it all the more fun - there's more satidfaction to "TIMBER! there goes your treeman!" than "well, I knocked over the badger."
On the other hand, I'm in the same boat as Darkson. I'm not a big painter. I have serious Lead under the bed syndrome...including a whole 40K army and teams I've been working on since two or three years back. I see painting as a chore, and I really need to be in the mood to paint. That said, I think its just damn lazy not to eventually get sixteen figs painted up to a half decent standard. Play with unpainted figs if you must, but I would prefer to see some progress. You only have to do an extra set of two or three minis to a half decent standard every couple of weeks - an hour or so's work. I don't need 'eavy metal standard, just neat and functional paint jobs. Its not difficult to get to that stage.

and i'm going to sit on the fence here...
i don't think you can condemn people who don't like to paint their mini's. what i mean is that there are plenty of people that can't stand painting, or they get daunted by the thought of all the figures. but i do understand that having 11 players all with a coherent colour scheme makes the game easier (you can see where all your players are) and aesthetically more pleasant.
personally i quite like to paint mini's although i'm not that great at it (i have great ideas, just need try and replicate them) and i think that if any of my mates hated painting so much, then all it would cost for me to do it would be a couple of beers.
but i don't think you should penalise players who don't paint.

There is the point of this hobby, its "your" hobby (game). I do not believe you should feel like you "have" to do what others say to enjoy it. If you do not like to paint..so what, if you like to paint great. I suck at the game, but love the painting side of it, so that is where I concentrate my skills. Sure my teammates love to poke fun at my lusterless die rolls,Torg wrote:Not often I disagree with you Torg, but I can't let this one go by. Sorry, doesn't work that way for everyone. I totally agree with Thadrin. Some love painting, others loathe it. But, even if you hate it, at least take the time to slap some black primer and a color or 2 on your miniature. It doesnt have to be 'Eavy Metal quality. I'm just sick of beating on silver Trolls surrounded by gray plastic gobbo's
I dislike painting-I am actually very good at it, but I have zero patience for it. But, I respected the fact that my fellow BB'ers have fully painted rosters, so I painted my team too.
I'm glad I did. They look TONS better now too
It was great to slap down my PAINTED team for their 1st game (and get thoroughly destroyed too, but thats another topic

Look, All Hobbys/Sports have a minimum amount of equipment that is required to play, why should ours be any diffrent? If you can't afford to play than perhaps this is the wrong hobby for you in the first place. I understand alumininum can recycling can be very rewarding. And just think, Soon you too can own a shiny new BB team.
