rules suck!

Post by grotemuis »

Maybe i'm going out on a limb here, but i'm getting a bit fed up with all the rules interpretations. In my opinion some people are so caught up in catching loop holes in the rules and reading every letter of the rules to see the bigger picture in this fabulous game called blood bowl.

I see many a post with fabulous constructions, which when looked at at an "realistic" perspective would be absolute ludicrous (actions that can only be performed by many armed, mastermind, giant strengthed players, and that's just only talking about halfling teams). Am I the only one that's just playing blood bowl for the fun of playing a game (this is obviously an understatement) with your friends? I'm a firm believer in when something strange happens during the game, you discuss what would be the more realistic course of action. Not to look at the exact wording of the rules and acting on this.

Having said this, I know the rules have to correctly interpreted and so correctly worded. The only way to strive for perfection is to discuss this, but what i'm missing is common sense!

If we don't find the loopholes before others do who won't think twice about abusing them, that's when we have a problem. To correct the loopholes, we must first find them. Surely you can see that?

I don't think you can always look at the realistic course of action. The game is a bit similar to many things that really happen but it is a fantasy game and there are a few items in the rules that don't make sense from a realism point-of-view but are inn there as a game mechanic. They balance things a bit to make the game funner, more balanced... whatever.

One specific case of this is that the interception roll is made after a pass is declared but before the pass is rolled to see if it was ever fumbled. Makes no sense looking at it like that. Everyone including the rules gurus know about this and, at least the rules gurus agree it is supposed to be this way. Interceptions do happen very rarely after all. It's in there as a mechanical way of evening up a difficult situation a bit. If the interception is successful, the pass was not fumbled. That line would help a lot guys (are you listening?)

There are more examples, I just can't think of them at this moment. The point I'm trying to make is that you need to see what the rules actually say, not what you think they should say or what they meant to say. These rules have been gone over a lot. They're, pretty much, worded the way Fanatic wants them. We need to find the areas where they're vague and open to misinterpretation. That's what we're discussing.

yes, I can see that. Sometimes I get a bit annoyed about all the rules abuse and problems arising from people who have lost perspective.

Bringing up that rule is not helping your argument, since nearly everyone here thinks that rule is stupid and would like to see it changed, and many (me included) play it differently in their league because it makes more sense.

Hmmmmmm..... there are 12 leagues programmed into the PBeM tool and one of the settings is Interception roll before or after the Pass roll as I programmed it to handle both rules.

11 of the 12 have the settings as Before not After. Gotta really be careful with that "nearly everyone" verbage there Zombie.

Do you know what's even worse:

Peaple who know something should be played different from the way it is played in your league but DO NOT meantion is as it is at a disadvantage to him.

(We had this case with failing Bonehead and thus losing your Blitz.. :pissed: )

I said "nearly everyone here", not "nearly everyone at your silly online leagues". Make a poll if you don't believe me.

I don't really think it's stupid and I don't care if you do Zombie. You seem to think everyone here thinks the way you do and I don't see that at all. The point is that it's written that way for a reason, and it appears to be there for the reasons I stated.

Make a poll if you don't believe me.
Your the one making the assumption Zombie, why dont u make the poll. Mechanically i agree, b4 the roll doesnt make sense, for fun gameplay (more important imo) it makes alot of sense.

you're missing my point. What i meant to say was that the interpretation of the rules is distorted! If a problem arises during a game, then some people just look at the rules in their exact wording and not what the rule is meant to represent!

grotemuis,

I hear exactly what you are saying, as I am a commish of a league that's been going for about 3 years now and before I ever bumped into TBB I did the same as you. I would relate in-game rules to real life and make interpretations that made sense. The game allows for this, as house rules etc. But what I found after coming to TBB was that my league played differently than many others out there and the rules interpretations that my group used would not be acceptable in a Tourney.

With that knowledge I still gleefully allow SPP's for fouls, roll for interception after the throw is rolled, (Lord help me I think I just agreed with Zombie  ) and keep stats for the number of casualties that my fans inflict...but I understand that these are not 'official' rules.

I know the rules well enough I would be able to adjust if I ever went to a Tourney, however I may be doing my friends a disservice since they might not be able to make the adjustment. However, as Commish I figure my number one obligation is to allow everyone in my league to enjoy themselves and so far so good I think, except for one who is now comtemplating a 'Rock Team'.
