A whack of what I'm sure are obvious and dumb questions....

Well I am getting into Blood Bowl LRB 5.0 for an upcoming League at my game store. Anyways a couple of my friends will be joining me. However we only played less than a handful of games from 4.0 and most of our games were done at a Conflict. Now this is where the problems arise.

I have read 5.0 several times and alot of it seems to be different than how 'we' play it. You see my friends never listen to me when I tell them its not right as the guys who were playing at the Conflict and showed them were not doing it how I'm explaining it as such I must be wrong. However with the league I NEED to know these things. So here are several questions that I want to confirm I am doing right not them.

1) Assissting Blocks - They claim anyone 'in base contact' can assist a block even if they are in someone elses tackle zone. Rules say otherwise....and there way makes Guard useless. However you have to be in a tackle zone to assist a block does it just mean you can only be in the TZ of the person getting hit with your assist?

2) Dodeging - This even I am iffy on. I use Lizardmen. My Skinks have Stunty, because of this they get to add +1 to EVERY dodge roll they make correct? On the same subject it says you only ever have to dodge once. What if you enter a tackle zone leave one then as you move more leave another isn't that 2 rolls?

3) Blitzing - Do you ignore Tackle Zones when you Blitz?

4) Entering tackle Zones - You may enter any teackle zone freely correct? Dodge roles only happen when you are leaving a TZ?

5) One Illegal Hit per turn? My friends swear its per player but the rules seem to imply toherwise although I'm not sure. Because of this games with 'Get The Ref' become a series of 5+ Illegal hits a turn for one team.

6) Turnovers - You get a turnover if you fail to catch a ball? Is this different in 5.0?

7) Knocked down - Ok this one is huge, for instance in my turn I knock down a mummy. I do not break his armour as such he is simply knocked down. My friends seem to think that the Undeads player next turn(IE RIGHT AFTER he got knocked down)the Mummy gets to stand up.

Injury Table - More of a random thought as we do mini leagues for fun but which table do you use? The reference sheet or the LRB table?

9) Throwing - Can you pick up a ball do a handoff and then throw it all in the same turn? Likewise can you pick it up and throw it in the same turn?

10) Modifiers - Whats with this +1 everywhere? Say my Skink pcisk up a ball. Normally he needs a 4...yet it says on the Reference sheet a plus 1.... for what? So does he only need a 3 instead?

11) Interceptions - In LRB 5.0 it says something that amkes me think that if anyone is in the throwers tackle zone they may attempt to intercept it. Likewise if the ruler(any part of it) touches a square containing a player(again any part of it)then an interception may be attempted yet the guys who showed my friends to play mentioned only the 'red line' on the ruler is what determines an interception.

12) Fouls - Umm ok I'm lost here. Looking at my book it seems alot different than the way we were taught that on a 6 the ref spots the foul and if he misses the first its a 4+ the next time. Was this a difference from 4.0 and 5.0? as it is in Red on my screen.

This is the basic trust me I have more about leagues. But I don't even want to go there until I have us playing the game properly. Also is it common that people teach people wrong and as such more people play that way even going as far to say the person using the rules is 'wrong?'

If you are in the tackle zone of the person being blocked and not in the tackle zone of an opposing player you may assist. Players on the opposing team in the tackle zone of the blocking player may provide defensive assists to the blocked player, as long as they're not in a tackle zone of an opposing player.

Every time you move out of a tackle zone you have to make a dodge roll. Remember that each square adjacent to a player is a seperate tackle zone. So every player has 8 Tackle Zones. Your skinks ignore tackle zones when dodging so they normally dodge on a 3+ (unless a skill lowers this chance.)

No, Tackle Zones still apply.

Correct

By illegal hit I assume you mean Foul Action. If that's the case, yes each team may make only one foul per turn. That's one player on the team fouling, other players may assist this foul though.

Yes if a player drops the ball due to a failed catch roll and it doesn't scatter to another player (who catches it) i.e. if the ball ends up on the floor after bouncing. It is a turnover.

Your friends are correct. If you don't break armour the player may stand up next turn by taking a move action and spending 3 movement points. They may even take a Blitz Action from the floor.

LRB Table. I hate the 12 = death.

Yup you can take a hand off and Pass action in a turn. You can also pick up the ball and throw it, this is because a pick up not an action as such. It's something a player tries to do automatically when they enter the square with the ball in. Note: You MUST try to pick up the ball if a player enters the square where the ball is.

All players get a +1 for dodging and picking up the ball to make it a little easier to do these things. There are actions that use your agility only though, like Leaping.

Someone else can deal with this, Interceptions still confuse me.

Yup the way fouling works has changed. The ref spots you fouling if you roll a doubles on the armour or injury roll instead of the seperate roll you make in LRB4. This has changed fouling strategies somewhat, but fouling has been weaked to compensate.

Wow ... fen gave great answers but this one wasn't quite right.

There are two important things to note with handling the ball.

If you fail a pick-up roll it is ALWAYS a turnover.

Failing a Catch roll BY ITSELF is never a turnover. It is what happened BEFORE the catch roll that matters.

A Pass or Handoff that is not caught when the ball comes to rest is a turnover ... so you could fail many catch rolls as long as you make one of them before the ball stops moving.

If the ball is knocked loose (from say knocking down the opposing ball carrier) then you can fail all the catch rolls and it is still not a turnover.

So a catch roll is never a turnover if failed ... but if a pass or handoff is not caught is what drives the turnover.

Whoops, you're quite right. I completely forgot about attempted catches from scattered balls (when you knock over the ball carrier) which don't result in a turnover if you fail.

Saved me from stumbling over my words trying to ask how tackle zones and block work, it still kindda confuses me. I look in the lrb5 and it has the person giving an assist while standing next to him. (pg21)

However I've seen some interesting versions of this... if I may keep your attention? Using team colours of red (r) ad blue (b)

I've seen assists used against me, and thus used it against them, when player in the * (r) blocks player in 6 (b) and there is a team member in 2 (r) he simply says the player in 6 is being held by player in 2(r) while *(r) is punching 6 (b) in the head. I can understand this and it makes sense, is this a house rule or is my failing english really rubbish to see this in the rules?

Basically you can assist if the opposing player in the block is in your tackle zone and you are in no other opposing player's tackle zone e.g.

2 (or 1) can block A with an assist from 1 (or 2)

Once again 1 or 2 can block A with an assist from the other. In that case 3 cannot assist as B cancels him out. B also cannot assist since he isn't adjancet to 1. If A tries to block 3 then he gets an assist from B - but 3 gets two assists - from 1 & 2.

There are a lot of rules guru's here, so if you have questions ask them. Galak and a few other are on the BBRC (Blood Bowl Rules Committee) so pretty much take their words as gospel and they are right 99.9% of the time.

Besides if someone tells you incorrectly, someone else will correct them.

Also, feel free to make up house rules as you see fit. A lot of people play with a mix of rules that they like and pitch the ones they dont. As league commish you have the final say on how things work. It's your league, run it how you wish. I would recommend learning the fundamentals first before exploring house rules, however.
