Conversion Project: New WHFB Wood Elves

Post by wesleytj »

The new wood elf line for Fantasy looks quite nice, and they've inspired me to do a conversion for Blood Bowl...

however, I don't play Wood Elves in Warhammer, and I haven't seen any of the figs in person, only on the website, so I need some advice.

also keep in mind that conversion is not something I do with the zeal some of you other modellers do. Basically for me "conversion" will mean "weapons removal"

I'm thinking of using a box of either glade guard or the new "eternal guard" figs for line elves...either should be pretty cool. I'm thinking the eternal guard will be easier to do the weapons removal on, primarily due to the quivers on the glade guard...taking them off would screw up the cloaks. One thing working for the glade guard, though, is that the box has 16 whereas the eternal guard has only 10, so the glade guard would give more options, for the same price even! Any other thoughts here?

For the catchers and throwers, I'm thinking of buying a box of the new Wardancers. They don't have the old wardancer look with the huge mohawks, and have very dynamic, catcher like poses. Put a ball in the hand of a couple of them and they would work as throwers as well.

For the Wardancers themselves, I am considering using the "spellsinger" figs...3 of the 4 spellsinger figs are actually off the ground...mid-leap as it were! And of those, 2 don't even have weapons to remove, and the 3rd has a staff that would be a pretty simple snip. I think they'd look sweet. Of course, if I'm paying the full $12 for each, they'd BETTER! Also the actual Wardancer Lord fig, another $12 guy, is pretty sharp, and is also off the ground (barely, if I am seeing the picture right). Thing is, I'm not sure it's different enough from the other Wardancers to distinguish it from the catchers/throwers.

Finally, the treeman. I have several really good options here. One is the LotR Treebeard fig, who looks pretty good and can probably be found somewhere for way less than retail. The main drawback there is that he's not from the new WH line so the "unified" look of the team takes a hit.

I do very much like the new WHFB treeman they've made for the wood elves, but on the other hand he's $45!! EEK! They do have a new unit, called "Tree Kin", which are kinda like treemen only smaller (and in game presumably weaker), but are only $15. I like the "real" treeman better, but not 3x better! I do also have other treeman type guys already which I could use, but again, the team unity would take a hit. Of course the allies are supposed to look different to a point, so maybe that's not such a big deal.

Anybody have any experience with this sort of work, or any thoughts that might help me a bit?

You might find that the Glade Guard quivers are not attached to the cloaks. I don't know ... have you studied the sprue on the GW website?

i hadn't thought of that...

i went on there just now and am looking at the sprue, but i've about gone blind in the process...the picture doesn't blow up from the thumbnail, so i'
m having to squint at the small pic and see if i can see the quivers on teh cloaks. it looks like they aren't on most of the cloaks, but i could be wrong.

Are you trying to get my wife to kill me or what? either that, or you work for GW.

Seriously, I've tried that sort of thing before, and it generally doesn't work. Plus it's really tough to justify buying a whole army set for 1 blood bowl team.

Yes, actually, I do want the cloaks on the minis, so it does matter.

sure...that'd be great, if it's the new wood elves...if the glade guard cloaks have no quivers, i'd like a box of those, and the rest as mentioned in the original post.

let me know by pm if you find out anything useful!

I look forward to seeing the team when you get the details worked out. Unfortunately I haven't seen the sprue.

was in a game store this weekend, and i came across the new glade guard box. from the looks of the little diagram on back, the cloaks have the quivers pre-attached. bastards!

Nobody here has new wood elves that can tell me for sure though? i was just sure there'd be at least one whfb wood elf player on here somewhere!

Hi Tad,

Unfortunately for the purposes you want the cloaks for the quivers are
molded on.

Hope that helps,

Thought you guys would like to hear the final word...

So I guess it's Plan B...those "Eternal Guard" for the line elves.

Why? Its plastic, just grind of the quivers and patch and damage up with GS, it will be way easier then working with the all metal eternal guard.
