Is anyone using wizards in their league?

Post by Remco »

We're about to start a new league, and one of the coaches wants to ban the use of a freebooted team wizard, as he argues that teams like dwarf an orc are much more effected than other teams. He refers to the Fireball, where you can knock over a dwarven cage because they have to make agility rolls. As dwarves are pretty much dependant on this tactic (in his opinion), it would be almost impossible to play with them, as everybody can "buy a victory" for 50,000 GPS.

How do you feel about this comment?!?

wizards, even the new ones, are still utterly ridiculous, broken, hopelessly-misdesigned hogwash...

but maybe i'm not being clear..

anyway, the point is, we switched ages and ages ago to team wizards who let you draw one card fromt he magic item deck (and only a team with a wizard could draw from the mi deck, and only one wizard per team, so max 1 card)... and cost them out at 50k...

havn't heard a complaint since..well, except when assholes join the league who play orcs and use every loophole and cheese-laden tactic and trick in the book and just don't quite understand the concept of a friendly league where people play the game to enjoy it and not to rub their opponent's noses in their ability to abuse poorly designed games so why don't you just go back over and play 40k with the 12-year-olds before i stick my samba classic up your tuhkas...

but i digress...

Its utter crud. Even using a similar spell(easier to hit them) in the mbbl2 and i still only popped the ball loose 2 out of 5 times. One, thats a good reason not to do i tight cage. Two, where are the rest of the dwarves? Three there are times in my 3rd edition league where my wizard failed to knock over mummies (u need more than the ag). Four, u only get one chance a game to do it.

The question is not how effective is a wizard (he can stop a TD being scored once per game) but can I afford one?

Once you reach TR200 money really starts to dry up, -1/-2 on winnings doesn't sound like a lot but it is. 50k on a wizard is an expensive luxury that most coaches will save for crunch games and the play offs. Therefore the effects aren't too pronounced.

Have to agree with Ian here .... I have yet to see anyone in my league freeboot either a Star Player OR a wizard yet ... we'll see if anyone does in Season 2.

Besides Sauri were perfect for stopping a wizard from taking out skinks with the ball. So are bob's and bc's. Now i mite freeboot Count Luthor in the coming season of mbbl with my necro team, if i have a shot at the finals, (are there finals in the mbbl?). However even if they were available in the mbbl2 or rabbl, i wouldnt.

Sean yes.

5 rounds of normal play.

6th round is a normal round except the 1st and 2nd place team after the first 5 rounds are playing for the championship ... 3rd and 4th play for 50k 3rd place prize money.

So there is a finals.

Yeah, but if I had had the extra 10k I would have freebooted Morgth N Throg for my finals match.

I have played 25 games with my High Elf team and only hired a wizard twice. In the league totally I think we have had 10 wizards in 150 games or so.

Therefore I don´t think they are broken. Plus that Galak has right about the money. My team have earned 20K in the last four games (won 3) so I don´t have the finances to hire wizards.

Out league just adopted 'ON PITCH SPELLCASTERS' as a trail...much to my disgruntlement..totally against my gameplan...just think the right roles and they can do more spells....Why dont those people just play a magic card game instead !!! (For all those Mogic the Gathering Fans)

Is it not ridiculous ? any comments ?

I'm biased on this. I love the on-pitch spellcaster rules. Booting the opposing wizard in the head until dead is great fun for the whole family.

I've played with these rules for over 2 years and I've found them a lot more balanced and enjoyable than the off pitch rules, but that's just my opinion.

Don't like them ... don't buy one. There are a lot of teams in the MBBL2 that do not have spellcasters ... more than do in fact.

Also since spells cannot be rerolled ... most spellcasters are no big deal and even if you get the ability to cast more spells ... most don't have a big impact on the match. Can't think of any matches off hand where the spellcaster was the big difference between victory and defeat ... that's a lot different than that lightning bolt from the sideline from that sneaky git of an off-pitch wizard.

The other thing is look throught the teams in the MBBL2, Holy G. You'll notice that a LOT of spellcaster use their skill rolls to get SKILLS not spells. Heck Deathwing's spellcaster just used a doubles roll to get Spikes so he wouldn't die (if he rolls doubles again, I bet he takes Null Field). Your concerns that the On-Pitch Spellcasters rules will turn the pitch into a free-for-all of magic will quickly prove to be untrue.

AV 6 Wood Elf Lineman Spellcasters cost 120k ... that's a lot of cash for someone who snaps like a twig when hit.
