Deathwing, could you please explain or give me a pointer? What is this STARS/QUILT thing?

STARS is Simple Team and Roster System, Quilt is Quick League Tracker system.

This system is an extension of the STARS team management system and will allow you to group up existing STARS teams into leagues. It also adds a basic scoring system and supports seasonal scores and stats.

Taken from a couple of my posts from the NAF site:

I really can't say enough about QUILT/STARS. We've got a casual open league going where we run multiple teams, some irregular players, some more regular.
Configure it to suit....then coaches simply play league games, input the results (inc updating of STARS rosters post-game) and the rest takes care of itself. It really does take so much hassle out of running a league, and as someone who used to use excel and teamtracker to the same ends I really can't recommend it highly enough. I love it!

I also use STARS to keep some starting tourney rosters online, some at 100k, some at 110k for various races, simply tweak them where necessary for various rulesets...then access them from anywhere.

QUILT does support non-NAF teams, so it's not necessary to have an 'all-NAF' league in order to utilise it.

I suppose the real beauty of it over some of the other league trackers available is that it's all hosted here on site. As I said, we have an open rolling LRB league going, members can simply play against each other anywhere, enter the results through STARS and the league table updates automatically. There's no reliance on a single pc, there's no need to mess around with FTP, there's not even any need for any personal webspace.

I know that some leagues out there have similar or more in-depth(independent) set-ups (the ECBBL springs to mind even without Ian mentioning it! ), and I know that theres some great utilities out there, but this is something we provide for all our members as part of membership, no technical knowledge required, no webspace or FTP required, just clean simple tracking of your league with the hassle taken out.

There's some good news for people wanting to try out Nuffle. I'm on the mailing list and apparently a new version should be released sometime soon. Primary updates are things like the default databases for players, rosters and skills (going to be 3.0 compliant, supposedly, not tough to update them manually to 4.0) and a few other features.

At least one person is apparently running a JBB league with it and has offered to add the roster upload and html roster functions to CVS. It's not nearly as well-integrated as FUMBBL or FBB, of course, but it's a nice start.

Can anyone recommend a good PHP server provider? I've received a few quotes use the PHPBB request mechanism but am wonder how other people have made out.

I have been using CWI for about 4 years. It's expensive but I need all the bells and whistles for freelance work, so it sort of pays for itself. Probably overkill in most situations.

I read a recommendation on a free host with some mildly annoying restrictions but no ads and fantastic specs. I'll edit this and post a link when I get home. With free services, you get what you pay for, but this was one of those rare cases in which you get a whole lot of what you pay for.


Now that I think of it, I have a friend who is quite happy with his nice, cheap hosting service. Low cost but nice features. I'll throw that link in here too, once I ask him about it.

{edit: the free service I was thinking is Host Ultra. I've never used them and they have some restrictive terms to keep people from using it as a file server, but they offer really nice features on the free plan.

I think the paid service was this one: http://www.webmasters.com/. I'm not sure on that, however, as I haven't been able to track him down to confirm it.

Keep in mind that I haven't used either of these so my recommendation in this regards is not a terribly strong one. Best thing to do is as your friends who would possibly know about such a thing. Word of mouth works.}
