Missing Ebay Item

Post by richred_uk »

I have bought something from Ebay and it looks to have gone missing in the post - I don't believe for a second the seller is trying to rip me off at all (it is another TBB'er), but wanted to see what is standard in these situations? Should he refund me and claim against his Post Office (of course I'd pay if it arrives later), or is it my loss and take it on the chin?

Not a huge amount, but 1st time it's happened to me so wasn't sure.

1) really do wait a longer time until you're 300% sure it won't turn up. Sometimes post can be delayed for weeks.
2) if it was sent registered/insured then the seller must care about the refunding via the post
3) if it was sent via regular email, it's just plain bad luck. Officially a seller isn't responsible if the post loses something and you arranged regular mail beforehand, but...
4) if the seller is a nice guy or feels sorry somehow, he could arrange some sort of compensation. When I sell/send something to somebody and it get's lost I offer to cover half the damage (so the risk is divided on both persons). That means, refund half of the buying price, send back the half of the the traded minis etc. But this is voluntary and just seperates a good trader from somebody who doesn't care.

Not sure how it was sent - it was from overseas (Europe - been just under a month now). I know that in the UK you can get proof of posting free of charge when you send an item, and claim up to about £22.00 from the Post Office if it goes astray. I have no idea if any other countries do this. Registered/ insurance wasn't offered or taken. As I say, it's not a big amount, but I don't know what is "standard" in these situations.

Sometimes the seller sends the envelope/parcel via surface out of accident (that happened to me 3x times), then it takes btw 4-10 weeks to reach US/Europe.

Yep, I've had thing accidentally go surface and they do take a painfully long time. I also had a small airmail packet take 5 weeks to get here. It was postmarked and addressed correctly, there was just 5 weeks between when the UK post accepted and the US post delivered it. Odd. I had already called and got replacement item delivered when it showed up.

It was sent through regular mail... already been to the post office, they say there is no way of claiming the damage for the lost package on them, because it was not sent insured. They also said they can't trace the package... so it just seems lost...

i've already offered a agreement on how to solve the problem.

think waiting best option. One of my mates who sells loads had a mega arguement over neg feedback from a bid that was late. It trashed his account after about 500 good sales; so best to leave it as long as possible.

I personally had something lost about a month ago and the seller actually gave me something else instead. not a bad option if it really has gone awol
