Pass Block & Go For It ?

Post by Toby »

Pass Block (General Skill)
A player with this skill is allowed to move three squares when the opposing coach announces that one of his players is going to pass the ball. This move is made out of sequence, after the range has been measured, but before any interception attempts have been made. However, the move may only be made if it allows the player to move into a position to attempt an interception, or to put the thrower or catcher in his tackle zone. The opposing coach is not allowed to change his mind about
passing the ball after the player with this skill has made his move. The special move is free, and in no way affects the player’s ability to move in the following turn. Apart from this, however, the move is made using all of the normal rules, and the player does have to dodge in order to leave opposing players’ tackle zones.

Ok does that mean that Sprint & Pass Block enables a player to Go For It and move 6 squares during his opponents turn in order to move in position for a interception ?

I'd say NO
Pass block says you can move three Squares.

However It does say the move is made using all the normal rules, suggesting GFI's so maybe you can use sprint.
Its certainly something I've never thought of.

Going For It is for players who have taken a normal action and used up all of their MA. It's not for Pass Block.

Chet, wouldnt you agree that the Text needs to be clarified then ?
Or else, change pass block to 1 square and allow go for it.

That has the interesting side effect that it puts sprint and sure feet into play as well. It also makes the pass block more difficult, depending on the distance the player has to move.

Pass Block is a infrequently taken skill as is ... don't limit it.

3 squares only .... however I would like to see Jump Up allowed.

No, although I'd love to find the magic bullet that prevents strange readings of this text.

As for Jump Up...don't hold your breath. I don't think you'll see players standing up for 3MA if it puts them into position to intercept, either. Generally speaking, players can't use skills while prone.

As I see it Pass Block is an under-utilised skill so I'd like to see it enhanced. However, GFI's would be too much.

Marcus's suggestion to change Jump Up (so you automatically stand up at the end of each player's turn) makes the combo much better too, and may be enough to tip the balance.

I think it's a neat idea. Jump up to go pass block. Would make both skills better, and I think Jump up, while useful, is a little weak compared to most other traits. If ya gotta roll doubles for it, why not allow it to be marginally better. And as mentioned, passblock is hardly overused either.

Sounds like fun to me!

Hmm, magic bullet for pass block and GFIs, let me think about it...

How about, in the pass block description, you insert the line, "Going For It is not allowed on a Pass Block."

Does any other rule than dodging apply here ?
I would suggest to simply say " the player does have to dodge in order to leave opposing players’ tackle zones"

If the rule needs a rewrite, it might be easier to spell out what isn't allowed. Stand Firm will work on Pass Block. You can Break Tackle on a Pass Block. You can Leap on a Pass Block. You can't GFI, as the skill allows you to move 3 squares, not 5! Etc.

We'll put this on our plates for October.

The rules are clear as they stand. I think you re looking very deep to find a way to get some advantages of the rules. Think about the idea, not how you can corrupt it.
I repeat: they are clear about pass block and this is the first time i read/ear something like this about this skill....

They are not, and in a Tournament situation its kind of hard to settle such a discussion, because right now, the words of the text allow GFI.

Following your argumentation, you can already use jump up as it allows you to stand up for free...

You can only use Jump Up at the beginning of an action, and Pass Block isn't an action. Actually, that logic works for Go For It as well, because it can only be used on an action.

I'd like to see a clarification for the Pass Block skill just to rule out these couple accidental interpretations completely. If there's room on the page, I don't see any real harm done. And no matter what is done with the rulebook, these types of misunderstandings qualify for inclusion in a FAQ document.

So, sorry Toby. I don't know if the rules are clear, but they are consistent on the matter if you know where to look. The words do not allow GFI or Jump Up because using Pass Block is not an action. I'd still like a rewrite because I see no reason to make people search through the book for explanations like this.
