Can They Survive
I'd like some opinions on this one. My local gaming store is about to start up a small league. There will be 8 games, and then a seeded tournament bracket for the "playoffs". I would like to play either dwarves or skaven, but I'm not sure which one to pick because most of the league is "bashy". Also, the league is allowing special weapons and it's already apparent that chainsaws will be everywhere. The first 4 games are scheaduled, so I won't get a choice of opponent for those.
I know what several of the other teams will be fieding on their starting roster:
1 Chaos- at least 3 str 4 warriors
1 Lizzies- 4-5 saurus, and they are going to have a krox at some point
1 CD- starting with 1 centaur
1 Orc- 2 black orcs
1 Gobbo- 2 trolls, 2 chainsaws starting
1 halfling- 2 treemen
1 skaven- possibly a rat ogre
1 DE
1 Human
1 norse
1 khemri
1 necromancer- 2 flesh golems to start
In several one-off games that we've been playing in the last month the chainsaws have done a real number on people. It's not uncommon to see 3-4 guys go out with serious injuries or death each game. AFAIK only the gobbo team will start off with chainsaws, but I know that other coaches have already done conversions on their figs.
I'm worried that the dwarves will still fall too quickly to replace, seeing as they're so expensive. The skaven will die too, but at least their linerats are only 50K.
So do you think dwarves or skaven are a better choice, and no matter which team I start with, do you think that getting a big guy as soon as I can is a good idea?
thanks

If you are worried about the bashiness of your league, go for dwarves. Although expensive, their high AV means they stay alive for a long time.
Don't worry about chainsaws - as soon as your opponent gets one going, immediately try to blitz the chainsaw wielder. The +3 bonus applies to the wielder also when he is knocked down with a running chainsaw, so he shouldn't stay on the pitch for long!

I'd go for the dwarves. The've got it all, all though there AG is not great, just the runners in fact so you'll need them both!
The lineman is equiped with Block and Tackle, so they are difficult to throw over. BO and CW are stronger but hav no skills to start with and should be no problem to bring down. A Troll Slayer brings in even more fun to throw your opponents down with Frenzy and Block. All in all a strong team to start with, if I have a look at the opponents.

I would say it all depends on what you like to play but obviously dwarves are easier to play with against all those bashy teams.
And for the chainsaw just blitz him the moment he gets it working, usually not many players with chainsaw survive for long if you do this.

So then would it be wise to start off with an ogre on the roster? With only 8 regular season games there won't be much chance to buy one later on.
I realize that he'd be an immediate target, but I'm worried about not having enough guys to take on all the high str players that I'll be facing.
If I started with an ogre the team would look like such:
1 runner
1 slayer
2 blitzers
1 ogre
6 lineman
5 FF
2 RR's
without an ogre it would be:
1 runner
2 slayers
2 blitzers
6 lineman
8 FF
2 RR

forget the ogre, you wont need him. and if you're worried about the other guys st4+ players, you should most definitely start w/ the 2 dauntless frenzy equipped troll slayers.
although the ff is a bit low, you shouldnt have too many getting hurt. and you need the slayers more than the blitzers, how often do they actually use their ag3? get an apoth, then your 2 blitzers, and you'll be fine.
