Is this a good Dwarf starting roster?
I'm working on a staating Dwarf roster. The following roster is the one that I like the most. However, I'm still undecided, so I thougth I'd ask for some help.
The roster is composed by two runners, two blitzers, seven longbeards, three rerolls and a fan factor of seven.
The possible modifications are included as options in the poll (Swap both blitzers, both runners or one of each for longbeards and extra FF), but I'm open to anything you'd like to suggest.

my vote goes to the Cockerel ianwilliams suggested!
Started with this team 5 times now and even managed to recover 2 deaths (longbeard and slayer) and 3 SI (runner, Blitzer & longbeard) in the 2nd game
This is the url of the team that lost those 2 players after 4 games:
http://www.pbembbl.org/teamView.php?teamid=19
And whatever you do:
Start with 4 Ag 3 Players (2 Runners and 2 Blitzers). You will only hurt yourself íf you dont do that. Chances are higher that he will concentrate on hurting ur Ag3 players the less you have of them and belive me:
With only Longbeards on the field its nearly impossible to score at all (well I did it twice *evil laughter*)

Either Ian's roster, or if you feel bold enough start with 2 Trollslayers and 1 runner instead and 1 FF less.
Get a Apoth and then a new Runner ASAP and protect the one you have now very well! The extra slayer will ensure that you can threaten opponents on both flanks!
If there's enough money in your league you might consider starting with one more RR...
Another good option is to start with 5LB, all positionals and 2 or 3 RR, giving you either 3 or 7 FF
Such a team with 3 RR does very well in tournaments (IMHO) but may lack FF in a league. With 2 RR and 7 FF that should not be a problem.

Ian, there are two things that disturbs me of this team. First, adding another AV 8 player to the starting makes it a bit more squishy (it that word can be ever applied to dwarves). Second, two rerolls seem just not enough to start with to me, as my teams tend to use rerolls rather fast (and that says something about my -lack of- coaching skills) and so I need as many rerolls as I can get. Thus, althougth the roster you recommend seems solid, it's just something I wouldn't feel comfortable playing with.ianwilliams wrote:How about

TRR are cheap to buy later, and given Dwarven resilience you don't need to spend lots of money buying new/replacement players.

Well, the advantage with Ian's lineup is twofold. First of all, you have built in rerolls for picking up the ball with Sure Hands - and Dwarves don't want to ever have to do anything other than a running play unless they're desperate. Second of all, everyone but the two players most likely to gain SPP's quickly has block. This means you're not sucking up rerolls like a lot of other teams. Third, and most important is that you're starting with almost all of your players from the beginning, and your rerolls cost less than the price of your skill players.

Skummy:
The lack of rerolls really bothers me. The only team I coached so far were Norses (well, and Chaos Dwarves a bit, too), and althougth all the team has block, I found out that I run out of rerolls on the third turn (It may have something to do with my very bad habit of trusting 1d blocks), so starting with as many rerolls as I can afford is really important in my teams.

My starting team would be that roster only with one more reroll and FF5.ianwilliams wrote:How about

Not a member of the "I must have a huge starting FF" club, especially with dwarfs where you rarely need to replace players and rerolls are cheap later. Lets remember that a high FF is also more money for your opponents...

For dwarfs I have gone a few different ways...but a couple of the most successful were:
1 runner
2 blitzers
2 troll slayers
6 longbeards
2 RRs
8 FF
This is the more conservative roster. Buy the runner and apothecary soon and then as the team develops buy rerolls to keep your TR down.
2 runners
2 blitzers
8 longbeards
2 RRs
4 FF
This is a fun one but risky if there are lots of big guys in the league. Buy a troll slayer even before the apothecary! Everyone has AV 9, thick skull and you have 12 players so you should be able to get along fine without one for awhile. The 4 FF won't bring you much money so ogres and silly things are pretty much out for awhile. I'd use this in a league full of elves and pansy humans.
1 runner
2 blitzers
1 ogre
7 longbeards
3 RRs
3 FF
This is the beardy roster. Hard hitting and nasty. Best way to run this roster is to play for casualties. Hurt your opponents and do as much permanent damage as you can. Your low FF will bring you less money but it will bring them less money too. Dwarfs teams are built to soak up damage so you won't need the money like they will. By the end of the league you will have left your mark on every team!
This team is good against low AV teams buit can hold it's own against Chaos and Undead too. Protect the runner, buy and apothecary and a runner asap.
Of allof them I would suggest the first one for a new dwarf coach.
Good luck! Grugni be with you!

My view is that even for teams who don't need lots of money high FF is important for winning those vital kickoff results. Not too many teams can shrug off Get The Ref or Pitch Invasion, so it gives you some insurance against that.Thadrin wrote:My starting team would be that roster only with one more reroll and FF5.

Only 2 TRR is a bit of a downer, but at only 80k each they are easy to buy (and help keep the team rating down). As others have said you shouldn't need to use them up on blocking or picking up the ball.
With the roster I proposed I think I'd probably buy a 3rd TRR either immediately after the apoth, or after an extra long beard (200k ~4 games). Then I'd get the 2nd troll slayer another TRR, so 13 players 4 TRR, requires 370k ~8 games.
