My new "Dipped" Stadium

Post by Virral »

Hey guys, thought I'd share my new board. It debuted at CanCon 2011 where it won Best Board. It's based around the concept of a full stadium where people seeing the game could walk around the edges while the game is in progress (a call back to my days in Hong Kong seeing the Rugby 7s).

I measured it up and the box clocks in at 88cm long, 49cm high and 22cm wide. It weighs an eye watering 32.7kg... I finally gave in and bought a fold up trolley to help move it around :)

It still needs a lot of work, eventually I want to populate it with spectators and put full signage on it. But it's at a stage now where it's ready to play and I'll add extra stuff in as I go.

Also, I want to point out that this may be a hobby wide record for the single largest "dipped" item! That's right, this is off white, heavy terracotta drybrush and then painted with new baltic pine wood stain and varnish :-D I was aiming for a sandstone-ish look, to go with the custom desert sand mat made for me by Impact.

Hope you all like it :)

Box closed

Box half opened (the sideline towers in boxes in the centre)

Image

Box fully open. As you can see the field was off-centre, partly to hide the "Impact Miniatures" sign (sorry tom), and partly to give the extra space needed for the catchment area of the dice tower. I spent a long time debating it, but ultimately decided it'd look better this way.

Image

Dugout. It's supposed to be locker rooms (reserves) with a smaller spot for the coach's office (sin bin). Above those are the observation decks (ko's and cas). Next to that is the VIP seating (scatter). These are a work in progress, I haven't done proper signage on them yet and will probably do a small amount of furniture in the upper decks.

Image

The Stands/Tracks. Obviously these are supposed to be the general admission stands. I was tempted to do just Turns/Rerolls with the lowest track for spectator miniatures, but ultimately decided against it because I didn't want people to get confused over what was a turn/reroll marker and what was decoration.

Image

One of the endzone stands... I picture these being private boxes for major sponsors. I'm going to put food vendors between the two stands, hotdog sellers etc.

Image

The first tower, a combo score and dice tower. This needs a bit of work, the dice had a tendency to rebound into the inside of the tower a bit... I know how to fix it, just need the time. The numbers are held on using velcro dots.

Image

And the second tower, the weather goblins (rotating setup stolen shamelessly from Frank). The top section is removable, and inside there is space for a speaker and remote to play BB sounds during the match. It's held on with rare earth magnets.

And here you can see how the parts of the towers come apart so that it can be packed into a box. If not for this, the box wouldn't close.

Very, very nice! This really does inspire you to make your own pitch. May i ask how you put together the case in thefirst place? (or if you just bought it?)

That's awesome, love the little details like the weather goblin and speakers for all those /cheer s, /boo s and /hurt s ;)

The sandstone looks spot on too, I would have guessed it were bought that way and not painted over at all, least of all dipped.

I think some blood bowl adverts would really finish it off - do you think you'll have a go at some?

Looks phenomenal, I love the weather tower with spinning gobbo barometer!

The only thing which I think needs improved are the areas where you have written (or painted) - so the word Score or the turn tracks. They look a little incongruous next to the rest of the pitch, but maybe that is what you need the signage for?? At the very least some calligraphy or similar would spruce it up.

Excellent work though, and for once dipping I can approve of!

Amazing. If you ever get around to touching up some of the minor details I hope you post more pictures.

A really nice Board !!

Great use of Hirst, Impact, and Hotz components.

I really need to try and build something similar.

the whole stadium is just - wow!
But as mentioned before :
The handwritten numbers and letters do the otherwise fantastic job no justice..

If you have a chance to change this it will be, in my oppinion, one of the best overall stadiums ever...

Yes I'm afraid I'm not much good with Calligraphy, that was the best I could manage. I've been investigating alternatives such as vinyl lettering but in terms of hand painted stuff that's about as good as it gets for me

Thanks to everyone for their kind words. I promise I'm going to keep working on this board, adding sideline adverts, spectators and so on. You'll get updates when I've had a chance to get some more done, I swear!

I would expect railway modelling type stores to have entire alphabets available in 20mm high plastic or etched brass. Don't give up searching!
