"The skeleton army was made by the Games Workshop around 1988" Did Games Workshop make plastic miniatures at that time? They look the same as the skeletons I had in my vampire army five years ago! Just wondering.

yeah i remember very fondly my 2nd edition skelly team using the same minis with old plastic space orc shoulder pads.

Yeah, I had a similar team too, except painted. Actually in 2nd edition Handbook there was a few images of such a team (Champions of Death), most of us probably got the idea for our teams from those. :-)
