Which team?

Post by omalley_19 »

ok i'm very new to this, been playing WHFB and 40k for ages and realy enjoy converting,
played my first beginner game last week
and am now officially hooked,
but i'm just asking a question that i'm sure has been asked a million times before,
which team,
i'm looking for a team i can convert,
and one that you can have a laugh with, orcs are a bit generic and seem very ease to convert though,
but i like the idea of an ogre team, anyone converted from the new ogres?
but then again i like the idea of lizardmen, and skinks being nimble and fast? again how easy are the plastics to convert to bloodbowl?

thanks in advance :-)

Welcome to TBB!

As for converting, most teams offer plenty of scope. Chaos might be an obvious place to start as there are plenty of mutations to play around with, but there are also teams that don't have GW miniatures or even obvious other company alternatives (do a search for ulfwerner or ulf to see some of the things people have come up with).

The main thing to do, imo, is pick a team that suits your style of play, or offers an interesting challenge (my goblins have finally won a game, but against a complete beginner), and let your imagination run riot for conversions. I know a couple of players who pride themselves on having no unconverted miniatures in their teams.

btw, there are a couple of astonishingly well painted and converted ogre teams out there. Try http://www.bloodbowl.org/index2.htm and go to gallery->teams and then scroll down to Lilopause's ogres :o

Hi,
Welcome to the board.

Firstly you are correct this question has be asked many times before and the answer usually comes back the same. i.e. Use Humans or Orcs as they are good starting teams, you get a lot for your money and they are the most forgiving on new coaches.

However if you are more interested in the creativity and playing something original then I would go with either Chaos (as suggested already) or Skaven who are a good solid team, can play a variety of styles and you can use a wide variety of models, from Blood Bowl or Warhammer conversions. These guys get mutations too so you can let your creative juices flow but they also are a relatively straightforward team to play and have a good chance at winning also!

Good luck anyway, hope you post what you come up with! :P

As a newbie to newbie,

I find starting with orcs and humans is fine, but after playing a few games with novice players like yourself, you will find it hard to win against the orcs.

This becomes especially true once you start adding more positional players to the teams, i.e. at least two more blitzers for humans, and two more blitzers and one or two more black orcs, although adding big guys tends to redress the balance a bit.

You will probably want another strength team to do the orcs, chaos dwarfs could be fun. Chaos and Dwarfs are ok too.

As said elsewhere, the best thing imho to do is to use the human/orc (or combination) models as the various teams/races until you find a team style that works for you....

I adore Skaven (on paper) and love the job I've done painting the 2ed models.... Can't play them for spit... just can't get my mind properly geared.... Having any team with a little more than a few players with 7 AV ends up with my team scuppered....

So I've watched myself, so to speak, play over the years and note that I like the pitched battles that, say, Orcs get into, and the free-wheeling plays that faster teams are famous for....

So, here's what I play:

ORCS: a little slow, but great strength and armor.... 2/3rds of my first 12 games were ties and losses... last 1/3rd wins as the team gells.... All of my averages (especially casualties) seem to be below average.... Still the team is exciting and games are a combination of fierce battles and the occasional touchdown....

NECROMANCER: slow, tough, cheap, regen Zombies for the line; couple of strong flesh golems; moderate blitzers (wights); quirky, fragile, speedy, frightening werewolves.... This team thrills me the most as it matches my playstyle.... If my opinion that team playstyle is truly most important is true, then this is my ultimate team.... 9 wins, 2 ties, 1 loss

LIZARDMEN: Krox and Sauri lend HUGE strength and armor protection to the few Skinks who will do the ball handling.... Slow advancement for the Sauri as they will rely mostly on casualties and the randomness of the MVP to skill up.... I lost one of my four skinks in my teams first game, but a Skink Journeyman is nothing to snort at! If you can balance the yin of the Skink with the yang of the Sauri, this AC/DC team can bring great victories....

NURGLE: The next great experiment.... Got a feeling this one will be a slow grinder like the Orcs... whether or not they play enjoyably is yet to be seen....

Play and analyze the styles and see what you enjoy most...!

Snots aren't really official, but you can have an Ogre team, which under LRB5, has snots instead of gobbo's.

Galak's site has the rules for the MBBL snots, which is the closest to official i suppose.
