Re: ChenZhen painting log - "Doom Trike" deathroller
I think the exhaust pipes are fine it gives the whole thing a sort of dragster feel, perfect for Deathroller Racing in fact! Shame you were too late for the competition but it's looking good so far and I'll echo the earlier comments about the team it looks very nice, congratulations. Oh and my tuppence worth on numbers is they are best on the bases with the main drawback to that being if you use skill rings then they are obscured.

Re: ChenZhen painting log - "Doom Trike" deathroller
For any interested parties - The parts list (all GW minis found in my attic)
Frame - 2 metal Imperial guard lascannon supports (bent from the wide "V" to the narrow "U"
Spoiler - dozer blade from old tank accessory sprue (took the two ends and trimmed most of the middle out) plasticard for the middle
Front wheel - I think that was the old 40k orc heavy weapon wheels, but I'm not sure.
Back wheels - I Guard tank track part. Used another one cut in half under the back axel. Drilled out wheels and attached to brass tube. Lizardman shields from Bretonian / lizardman fantasy starter box used as hub caps.
Dwarf bits from old regiment box for dwarf face and axe bits.
Driver - one of the runelord guards (the second guard gave up part of his hammer so lever #2 would match. Spiked handle topper from black orc box.
Exhaust - old I guard heavy flamed trimmed and drilled.
Lots and lots of brass pins!
Brown stuff (the only putty I had laying around that was still good)
I wanted the mini to look well used, so I took the wheels (and other "metal" parts that would get banged up through normal deathroller business) outside and rubbed them on the driveway until they were suitably scuffed up. This took a few trips. I'm sure it looked odd to the neighbours!

Yep. I wish it wasn't the case, but it is absolutely true. I primed and started painting... Only to see it was lacking in the "looking mean" department.Norse wrote:wheels need spikes/studs..

Oh well.

Looking great ChenZhen!
I like how you have used the drivers weapon hands for the controls. Simple and effective

Re: ChenZhen painting log - "Doom Trike" deathroller
Thanks! I really didn't want to buy any new models, and the dual lever control seemed like a good fit. It also made the conversion easier!
Added spiked tires, metal on the side frame, and a winged side detail.

Re: ChenZhen painting log - "Doom Trike" deathroller
I liked the spikes on the front wheel, but the back wheels still bugged me. I went with bigger wheels and added dwarven studs to them. Then I made the base. I will still be doing static grass to match the rest of the team. However, I put what will be a giant muddy rut down the middle of the base. I also will have some mud and grass clumps on the center wheel.

Looks cracking! The amendments to the rear wheels are vastly improved - I really wouldn't want to get mashed by those studs (or the spiked wheel for that matter!)

Loud pipes save lives!
I agree, the added detail really does give the model a more finished/completemenacing look (of doom)

Looking cool Chen!
What is the orange at the bottom of the main spike wheel spikes?
The studs on the rear wheel look good. Once painted the wheels will look like solid cast iron. I would not like to be rolled over with that!

Re: ChenZhen painting log - "Doom Trike" deathroller
It is modeling putty (brown stuff). I added a strip of the putty down the middle, rolled over it with a spare wheel, added holes that line up with the wheel spaces, and put a whole where the wheel currently is (so it looks like it is cutting through the sod).velvet mark wrote:Looking cool Chen!

I added some chunks of the putty to the wheel so I could have it look like the wheel has dirt, mud, and grass that it has rolled through stuck to the wheel. I hope it will look good, but this is the current vision.

Re: ChenZhen painting log - "Doom Trike" deathroller
Slow going the last few days. Thanksgiving is great for getting together with family and eating... Not so good for modeling.
I did get the trike base painted up. I also converted 4 black orcs for my brother in law who wants to play and is eager to try his hand at painting. The goal is to do fast and simple converting for this team (while still looking good).
