Was trying to access the virtual alchemist site but got redirected to some other crappy page instead. Has it closed down?

Unfortunately yes. Last year they announced that the online shop is closed because of illness.

Wolfgang Zeller bought 5 BB Games Day Lizards teams from them. It was a very good deal - for me too....
