I converted my 2nd Ed. Dwarf Kickers to runners by the simple expedient of clipping a healthy "corner" off of the base tag. I simply stuck it through until I got the position I wanted, then used cutters to clip it off.
Now, this doesn't give you a lot of metal to glue into the base, but the next step is what works really nicely. . . .
After the figures are glued into their bases, I used some "spackle" (the kind of putty used to repair walls) to fill in the bases from below squeezing it in so that it fills all of the gaps (and wiping off the excess that bulges through onto the upper surfaces of the base), then scraping the putty flat and leaving them to dry overnight.
This fills in the bases (lowering the center of gravity), eliminates those ugly gaps in the bases, providing a nice surface for flocking, helps steady figures that are glued in "fragily" and just makes for a nice finishing touch.
By the way, I painted my 2nd Ed. Dwarves very simply -- but several people have said that they are the best looking team in our League. (I will note that they are not the best looking individual paint jobs -- but a a TEAM, they look really good on the pitch). I basically painted them "Blood Red" with Silver pads and Black boots (plus flesh and beards, of course) . . . and they do look really good.
Finally, I do paint the base rings of all of my teams to help distinguish player types . . . but I use the colors that I've used on the figures. For the Dwarves, Linemen have black rings; Runners, red; Blitzers, flesh; and Trollslayers, siver. It works for me, but you should do whatever seems right to you.

One more thing . . .
I always print my players' names on the back of the base ring face (so I can read them from behind the team since we play with the pitch facing end-to-end) and I always refer to my players by name ("Boris will blitz", etc.). This practise seems to help establish more of an identity for the different players.
Have fun!

No photos yet . . . I'll try to see if I can take some tomorrow (it is about 4 am here in California and the figures are out in the car).
My miniatures background is in historical gaming (I've only been playing BB for about six weeks). One of the keys to painting historical units is to paint "the unit" as opposed to individual figures.
I try to keep each figure's paint job rather simple so that they don't get too "fussied up". Now that doesn't mean that each figure is a work of art (some people paint beautifully), but we are playing a game and are usually looking at the figures from about two feet away . . . so simple works.
I had pre-primed the Dwarves, but (except for flocking the bases) I painted a whole team (18 figures since I had a couple of Star Players too) during part of one evening (I was also working on some British colonials.
Anyway, I'll try to get a photo tomorrow (although I'm not sure how to post it here).

Okay, I now have a "not very good" photo of my Dwarves online. The flash really washed them out, made the colors jump a lot more than in real life and caused a lot of glare off of the sealer. They look better in person -- but the simplicity of the concept is the important thing.

My two Runners (converted from Kickers) can be seen in the back (red base rings).
