we have applied for a World Record attempt, but they have refused.

Anyway, the newsletter to all captains went out on Monday. If you have not gotten it, first look in your Spam folder and then contact us by email.

Did they give a reason for the refusal?

Thank you for sending us the details of your proposed record attempt for 'Largest miniature strategy game tourney'.

Unfortunately, after thoroughly reviewing your application with members of our research team, we are afraid to say that we cannot accept your proposal as a Guinness World Records title.

We receive over 50,000 enquiries a year from which only a small proportion are approved by our experienced researchers to establish new categories. These are not 'made up' to suit an individual proposal, but rather 'evolve' as a result of international competition in a field, which naturally accommodates superlatives of the sort that we are interested in. We think you will appreciate that we are bound to favour those that reflect the greatest interest.

Whilst we appreciate this is not the decision you hoped for, we trust that you will understand our decision. You may want to consider these record titles as alternatives:

For information on what makes a record, we would advise before submitting an application to visit http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/FAQ ... rld-record. This page will provide you with helpful information if you are thinking about breaking or setting a record.

Once again thank you for contacting Guinness World Records.

Interesting, the one that sirsebstar has highlighted (only skim read), is for multiple venues with single controlling authority. Wales for one is holding a local event on the same weekend as WC. If the Welsh TO (and any other TO's having an event that Saturday say) were to defer formally to the WC committee would we not be able to meet the criteria for that one?

Criteria from site...

This record is for the greatest number of people playing board games simultaneously across multiple venues.
This record is to be attempted by a sole organisation.
This record is measured by the number of people simultaneously playing board games.
For the purpose of this record a board game is a tabletop format game that can involve counters or pieces which are moved or placed atop of a pre-marked surface or "board", according to a set of rules.

So for example as long as everyone was playing at 11:00 Zulu Time and 'organised' by you we would meet those criteria?

Ah... There is a single board game one (link) ... but we need more people...

Who
JAPAN SHOGI ASSOCIATION, JAPAN TOBACCO INC., TABLE MARK CO., LTD.
What
3148 PEOPLE
Where
JAPAN (KOTO)
When
18 NOVEMBER 2012
The most people playing a board game simultaneously is 3,148 and was achieved by Japan Shogi Association, Japan Tobacco Inc. and TableMark Co., Ltd. (all Japan), at Tokyo Big Sight, in Koto, Tokyo, Japan, on 18 November 2012. The event was held in the 1st match of Shogi Nihon series JT Pro kousikien/Tablemark kodomo taikai (official children's match) in Tokyo. All 3,148 participants were elementry school children and they played shogi, a Japanese board game.

Maybe one to go for next World Cup! :D

version 3.2.1 of the squad rosters is now available for download. This version checks if at least 11 regular players have been hired before adding a starplayer. Thanks to Comfrance to point this out to us.
