Blalancing rules for a long term leauge

I don't know about what others have found but it seems to me that the longer a blood bowl leauge goes on the more unballanced it gets, and frankly nothing irks me more than teams with a rating of say 300 plays vs a rookie team. Ultimatly long term ballance is up to all the coahes in the leauge however there seems to be that one coach who is happy to decimate the newcommers to the leauge. So my question is What are the other leauge commishs are doing, in leauges that run for more than one season, to help inspire coaches to play againsed teams that are close in team rating to their opponents? I'll post my thoughts on leauge ballancing rules if this tread gets some responces.

There are several rules out there for post-season tactics to help promote parity. One is The Crush. Try Galak's site

We ahve two diffrent divisons in our league and just seperating the super powered teams untill the younger teams get up there works fine for us. though I also think our league is especially friendly and have never really had anyone try and abuse the system.

Same here - Two divisions every season... Superleague for "existing teams" and division 1 for 100 rated starters...
However we also invented the "Big league" last season - which I highly recommend for leagues to small to host 2 divisions...
Anyone can play anyone...
Points system
win - 50
draw - 25
loss - 10
+ TD difference times 3 + casualty difference...
Actually you can have your own system of points but 50 ish for a win and less than 10 for a loss should work with the following handicap system...
divide the bigger team rating by the littler one
1-1.25 = no handicap
1.25-1.5 = +5/-5 points
1.5-1.75 = +10/-10 points
1.75-2.0 = +15/-15 points
2.0-2.5 = +20/-20 points
2.5-3.0 = +25/-25 points
3.0+ = +30/-30 points
This means if a rookie team manages to hold a 301 rated team to 2-0 then...
Big team: 50+6-30 = 26
Little team: 10-6+30 = 34
It lead to an exciting league last season although once again my 293 rated elves got shafted by losing 6-3 to a 167 rated wood elf team (d'oh)
At the end of the season the top 4 played off for the overall championship. In addition prizes were awarded for "highest finishing rookie" and highest finishing superleague team...

This is the league table by the end of the season. HINT "H" is the handicap each team got and ones with pluses are division 1 and ones with minuses are superleague!
I also recommend a) beefing up handicap, b) using extra MVPs
This is important in a league with a wide gulf between teams.
And finally, as commissioner YOU can set random events in play... You just have to think of balancing and characterful events people won't hate...
The beauty of the handicap system is that any team can compete

Those are great ideas and truly the best part of this forum is the sharing of ideas. I love the dividing team rating idea noodle.
In the leauge that I play in we do somthing a little different, sort of a 3 teired approach. This is all preticated on the premise that a good team will play down to their inexperianced opponents level.
1. If both teams team ratings are within 51 points then only the handicap table is used.
2. If the team ratings are not within 51 points then the favorate must remove team rerolls untill the ratings are within 51 points, however the original difference in team ratings is used to determine rolls on the handicap table. The team rating value of rerolls differs from team to team so some teams rerolls are worth 5 team rating points like wood elves and Undead's rerolls are worth 7 team rating points. All Rerolls must be removed before moving on to tier 3
3. If the team ratings are still not within 51 points then the favorate team must remove their BEST player (who will refuse to play againsed these bums) in terms of team rating value, (eg, A dark elf blitzer with 50 spp has a team rating value of 15. A 10 value for cost and 5 value for spps.) If the team ratings are not within 51 points then move onto the next best player in terms of team rating value. If the favorate's team rating is under 51 points different they may take back rerolls to bring the ream ratings to within 51 points, ( eg. after removing their star player the difference in team rating is only 30 points different. The rest of the team pulls up their socks and can take back as many rerolls to bring the difference to within the 51 point margin)
O.K. I know it sounds complicated but if you can work out a team rating you can figure this out. It works and it gives anybody a chance on any given day, and as an added bonus it really hampers the super mega team and limits those super tems to playing one another. It is almost impossable to play a 300 team v.s. a rookie team, and if you ask me that is a good thing. Well have fun with this one folks. I know there will be many of you who don't like it but almost all the coaches in our leauge swear by this system S.

I think thats the key - finding an approach that is welcomed by most of your coaches...

At the moment we have 3 Divisions. One relegated from the top. 2 up from the bottom. A TR cap of 300. I say at the moment because it may change depending on Galaks idea. Other things we do is allow pre-season friendlies where injuries don't count, but players still get the points, combined with the use of the handicap table/extra SPP's from DT. It does work well, or at least has this year.

Looks cool but certainly wouldn't work in our league. Our league is very much like English football - superteams exist and they jealously guard their players...
p.s. - after each season have a rules review

despite playing with some power gamers in my leagues we seam to play less the old teams and concentrate on developing new ones. Teams can play who they like but players are more likely to get a game if they dont have a silly 300+team. Long time back I had an unplayable High elf team which were too good and won every game. Gradually they got no games as it was a bit of an exhibition match. Think now with capped winning system not much too worry about, and coaches reluctance to play VS an over-the-top team
