Cage Matches

Post by McSnaga »

Designed this originally for 2nd edition when I was working on Daemon rules.

Blood Bowl Cage Matches

While the bulk of Blood Bowl matches are held on grass pitches, or at least grounds that appear at first glance to appear to have near normal pitches, from the darker corners of the Empire emerged a new style of play.

Fans on the borders of some of the more, shall we say, wild lands enjoyed their diverse games of Blood Bowl between the more traditional teams and some of the erm .. less-civilised mobs. It became apparent however, that the increasing tendency for Daemons, Chaos gribblies, Lizardmen, Norse Beserkers etc. resulted in empty lower seats immediately around the pitch. All manner of violent beasties found their way into the crowd during a Blood Bowl match. Previously this could have been put down to some over-excited 'foreign' fans, but increasingly the ever more blood-thirsty players were ending up in the lower seats, pushed into there in the course of play.

The age-old tradition of beating up the unfortunate player suddenly finding himself surrounded by opposing fans was finding decreasing support when the fans found themselves trying to uphold this tradition against a slobbering chaos spawn .. or worse.

To combat this, and against the threat of lower attendances and gate receipts, borderland stadium owners erected a metal cage around the pitch with entrances from the dugouts. To combat the threat of some of the tougher lunatics on and off the pitch attempting to bend the bars, the cage was adorned with numerous metal spikes, inside and out.

New tactics emerged. Lightly armoured catchers would avoid running near the sides for fear of being impaled on the surrounding spikes, while blood-hungry beserkers would do their upmost to take the fight to the edges

Fans meanwhile found that while they were protected from the nutters on the pitch, they were now trapped with the nutters in the crowd, and many a fan died from being impaled on the cage.

Cage Match Rules:

1. If the result of a block means the player would normally be pushed off the pitch, then they are instead pushed onto the spikes of the cage - roll for injury. No armour roll is required and no modifiers apply to this role. The player remains prone, face-down on the pitch whatever the result.
In a cage match, no injured/k.o.'d player is ever removed from the pitch until a touchdown is scored or the end of a half (whichever comes first). Ensure you note on your roster the injury so you don't mistake and injured/ko'd player for a stunned one.

2. If a player is pushed into a square adjacent to the edge of the pitch and remains upright, then the pushed player must make a dodge roll (all normal modifiers apply) to avoid being impaled on the spikes. If he fails, refer to rule 1.

3. If a player is pushed into an edge square and is knocked over, then there is a +2 bonus to the roll to beat the AV.

4. Any player making a Diving Tackle or a Diving Catch in an edge square must make a dodge roll (no penalties apply) to avoid the spikes. If he fails, refer to rule 1.

5. If a player is knocked over in an edge square without being pushed back, then no special rules apply.

6. Treat Pitch Invasions as a Riot result instead - increase the number of fans killed by 50% (round down) as they are impaled on the spikes.

7. Add +2 to the distance of throw-ins due to the elevation to get the ball over the cage.

8. Balls cannot bounce off the pitch. Due to the risk of punctures, more solid balls are used. If a bouncing ball would scatter off the pitch it instead bounces to a random square, adjacent to the square it would have left the field from.

9. Deviating throws and kicks can end up with the ball going off the pitch as usual (see rule 7 about throw ins). Once it lands though it cannot bounce out. See rule 8.

Heh I like the idea of this, would be good for a laugh in one off games,
Or maybe Cup finals,special matches.
Probably see a lot of teams disappearing after the games though

We use special pitch here that your team can buy, and we have something like that but nobody has bough one for the moment.
