Anyone ever try an end of season All-Star Game in leagues?

Got a great idea and/or proposal for BloodBowl?

Yes..

In the REBBL League (www.rebbl.com) we had an end of season all-star game between the two conferences.

It was PBEM but it was pretty fun. All of the coaches of each league decided what guys to put on the roster. At least one player from each team was selected.

Then every coach had a turn.

Check out the forums and look for the All Pro threads to see how it all went down.

We tried it a long time ago. It was fun, but took pretty much all day. With so many coaches involved there was a lot more talking than playing going on!

I was in a league about 15 years ago, and we tried twice to play an All-Star Game. The first time was OK, we dismissed such things as Animosity and Hatred, at least from members of the same division's team (Grime Syndicate v R.I.P. Six). Each coach rotated controlling the team for each turn.

The second All-Star Game, however, was truly memorable. Rather than just a standard BB game as before, we set up an enormous Dungeonbowl cavern (using tiles from Dungeonbowl and WHFB), and created something to really test your luck. We called it The Wilder, and if a player could succeed in entering the chamber (2 walls to break through!), the player's coach rolled 2d6. Anything from the player being killed on the spot by the gods, to receiving Skills, Mutations, or even a Wish, could potentially happen (and this wasn't an exhibition; this was played for keeps, just like any other league match). Plus, just for kicks, we added some wandering monsters...

Further, each coach nominated his best 5 players, and started with 2 in the dungeon, with new players coming in as per the Dungeonbowl rules, through the teleporter squares (which were increased to 12 from 6).

It took a few hours, to the point where we were wondering if the game would ever end...and then, it happened. A player broke through the Wilder and the coach rolled the dice...and got a WISH! He promptly wished to be placed upright in any empty square of the opponent's end zone, with the ball in his hands! TOUCHDOWN!

And so the Grime Syndicate took their revenge on the R.I.P. Six (who had won the first All-Star game).

I'm considering adding an All-Scar Game (note the spelling, that's deliberate) at the end of my current league season (I'm commish, you see), and it has been suggested by some of my coaches, so maybe...just maybe...

In the league I play in (Raincity Bloodbowl League), we're going to try an all star game where each player contributes their 4 best (spp) players and forms a team of 16 players (no rerolls as they aren't used to playing with one another I believe). Each player will play half of a half with the other 3 as advisors. Or perhaps it will be left to each team to discern a way to play.

All the proceeds will be donated to the Our Lady of Touchdowns Bloodbowl Summer Camps for poor children of washed up bloodbowl hasbeens. I believe each of the teams that contributed players to the winning side will get +1 FF and any SPPs gained during the game will be kept. Given the huge size and fame of such a game, there will be plenty of apothecaries and necromancers one site-- the worst any player will sustain will be to be badly hut and out of the rest of the game.

We had a couple of Pro-bowls a few years back. Site's down at the moment but here's the gist:

The Pro Bowl is an end of season game featuring the best players in their positions currently active in the Wodell League, loosely split between the good guys, Empire and Allies, and the bad guys, The Foe.
It's intended as a bit of fun after the ardours and pressure of a long hard season, with as many coaches (either working in teams or in rotation) as possible. Should anybody feel like playing any games with the rosters posted up here, we'd love to hear how you got on! At this point I'd like to thank the guys on Blood Bowl Central who provided a lot of advice and feedback when we kicked this idea around in a thread about a year back.

Rosters are drawn up as follows:

Empire and Allies: 2 Throwers, 2 Catchers, 4 Blitzers, 7 Linemen and a Big Guy.
The Foe: 2 Throwers, 2 Catchers, 2 Blitzers, 2 Blockers, 7 Linemen and a Big Guy.

The various positions are categorised as follows:

Linemen: Anything called a lineman plus Beastman, Hobgoblin, Longbeard, Goblin, Halfling, Skeleton, and Zombie.
Thrower: Anything called a thrower plus Dwarf Runner and Phoenix Warrior.
Catcher: Anything called a catcher plus Goblin, Halfling, Lion Warrior, Gutter Runner, Skink and Ghoul.
Blitzer: Anything called a Blitzer plus Beastman, Bull Centaur, Dragon Warrior, Storm Vermin, Wight , Trollslayer, Witch Elf and Wardancer.
Blocker: Anything called a Blocker plus Chaos Warrior, Black Orc, Saurus and Mummy.
Big Guy: Anything (obviously) called a Big Guy!

Then it's just a question of going through the rosters and filling the slots with the players with the highest total career Star Player Points.

Game Rules.
No team re-rolls, no wizards, no apothecaries and all niggling injuries are ignored. Any serious injuries or deaths during the game are treated as badly hurt. Pro Bowl team ratings are worked out by total cost of players + total Star Player Points divided by 5. Apply any handicap but don't award any Star Player Points, it's enough kudos adding Pro-Bowler to the players' career stats! Remember it's just for fun and shouldn't have any bearing on the following season for those involved (apart from bragging rights!).

Obviously this was pre-necro, ogre , vamp etc...

Yes, the Blood Bowl league in Auckland, NZ, has a standard All Star fixture after the regular winter season every year.

Players are selected based (mainly) on SPPs, teams are divided (roughly) into erm "Good" and "Bad" pacts (some "discretion" is required to even up the teams).

Each team is coached by 3 or 4 coaches who own some of the players in that team (turns rotate between the coaches).

It's very entertaining as the coaches who are not playing in a particular turn heckle and abuse the moving coach. It's a blast.

Last game I played in ended in a 2-2 draw.

Cheers

We've kinda gotten around this. Players with the most SPP's are in the game and then we use the coaches with the worst record get to go at it. So it's a little bonus for those coaches in the cellar to shoot for.

I've never tried this but to add to the fun why don't you let coaches control their own players, without being allowed to talk to each other. This would add to the reality of players from different teams not being used to playing with each other.

Coaches could talk after a turnover eg "why didn't you block that guy", so the communication between the players would improve as the game went on, as it would in a real all-star game. Once the oppostion's turn finished, however, all talk must end. A further rule - hard to enforce - would be that you can only discuss what you should have done, not what you will do.

A dice roll could decide which coach moves first each turn.

we did in some of our leagues back in the day...we divided the league into 2 equal divisions and each coach in the division voted for 16 all stars, of which up to 2 were throwers, 4 blitzers, 4 catchers, 4 blockers. That meant at least 2 lineman types as well.

The players from those positions receiving the most votes each received an MVP award for their team, and then played in a tourney style all-star game (no perm. injuries), and given 2rr and 6ff. Each was coached by the coach from that division with the best record that season.

It was a good time.

hmmmm.... these are all interesting. Hey i'd vote to have all-star games implemented in the official rules. Mybe it should be considered, it seems i'm not the only one who would think so. Having players from different races and what not playing in an all-star game would probably cause alot of egos to explode, so maybe throwing in a rule similar to "I'm the greatest" after a TD is scored between 2 teammates would make it funny. Or having a dugout brawl between teammates on the bench occur when someone is sent off for fouling or causes a turnover on their team would shake things up and make it a unique game to play.

Did try this once and the system we used was

-Each team (8 in the league) put up their best 4 players (chosen by their coach, not necessarily highest SPPs) The two teams (Bashers vs Smashers) were assigned a teams players by coin-toss (16 a side) Each coach on a side was given a number 1-4, and each coach would in turn assign a player to the starting 11 until finished (coach 4 would only have 2 players on the pitch, everyone else 3)
-Each coach controlled their own players (4 coachs to a side) You could ask, plan, beg and plead for your fellow coachs to do things (including assist blocks, hand-off and pass to teammates) but final control was the coach of the given player.
-No team rerolls, so a flubbed roll ended your turn.
-At the start of each team turn, the coaches would move in a randomly determined order (we used 4 numbered coins in a hat, redrawn each turn, although a dice-roll might have worked) and if your side suffered a turn-over before it came to your turn, well, tough luck. We did actually make it all the way to the fourth coach three? or four? times (out of 32 turns).
-Every coach brought their own apothecary, and each side had a team apothecary that would automatically heal the FIRST serious injury or death inflicted on any player of the side. After that, you could use your own apothecary only on your own injured players, and only once. We did have one permenant death (a dwarf coach whose players had a horror run of AV rolls, used his sides apo, then his own, then watched his blitzer killed by a double skulls block vs a gutter runner, the indignity!) and at least one other lasting SI.
-Every player got an MVP, plus all normal SPPs, plus the normal MVP assigned at games end.
-We used the old special play cards, and every coach drew one at random (we pruned out a few of the less useful events, like the opposing coach being kidnapped, bonus winnings etc). Nowdays we would probably use the LRB 5.0 inducments in some reasonably random manner.
-We ditched the four minute turn limit.

It was a blast, and I do thoroughly reccomend you try it. It did take just over six hours though, so put aside a day to do it.
