Help !

Post by Relborn »

Hi,

I tried to install the actual PBeM tool, but every time I try to start it I get the following error "Invalid Filename". Did I forget to install something or did I installed the tool wrong ?

Can anybody help me out please ...

Please forgive my stupid question, but did you change the name or anything? Maybe there's an illegal character (like ":" or "/") in there. Try changing the name to nothing but letters and "_"s.

A more common problem that occurs is forgetting to keep the directory structure when you unzip. Make sure that you have the appropriate option selected when you unzip the file.

Cheers,
Martyn

I can't get version 2.3b to work either. I donwloaded, unzipped without fiddling with the names or order of any files, and it doesn't work. When I try to start a new game it says "File not found" don't know which file. When I try and load a game it has some long thing about some violation and doesn't work. this has happened to 2 other friends as well. A solution for someone who is not great with computers please?

I think Martyn is on the right way. While unzipping the files I just clicked and dropped them to a new folder I created. I try to unzipp the files your way an report wether it works or not.

In every case thanks for your help ...

btw ... no I did not change the names of any files

My guess is that you have the same problem as explained by MartinQ above.

The game needs the directory structure to be maintained when you unzip it or it will not work.

From memory the struture is:-

PBEMtool

in this directory you should have the exe file

this directory also has the following subdirectories

ini
images
roster

Below roster are further subdirecotries for each race to hold the pictures

The directory names might not be correct. However, if you do not have a structure like this then you need to unzip the file again and maintain the directory structure within the zip file.

Please post the directory structure you have and state which directory you have the exe file in.

This should help see if this is the problem or not.

If you have pictures and lots of directories with jpgs in, there is no need to list all those directories.

Dave has it right ... when you unzip you really need to make sure you check the Use Folders option.

Showing us what you have though directory wise is the best key to solving your problems.

Also all the pictures for the roster directory are in the optional image files on the pbembb.com website.

Right it now works (to be honest I don't really know why - I kept doing the same thing as far as I could see). This would be why I do mechanical engineering rather than this computer stuff. If it doesn't work hit it with a hammer until it does...
