Just a thought about tourneys

Post by neverdodge »

I ask myself if it could be possible for organisers to leave the saturday afternoon free . So for example tourneys could start on the saturday moning, with one game from 10 to 12, then another from 12.30 to 14.30 . That could leave time for people to visit other european town, have shopping etc ..

Then the tourney could restart on saturday evening, and finisch the sunday .

Don t know if that s possible, but i wanna share it .

I agree, I have been three times in Amsterdam, and I have never visited the city.

I think it's pretty hard to force people to arrive at 9.00. that's needed if yo want to start at 10.00.

We have succesfully run two tourneys with 4 matches on Saturday, and just 2 on Sunday, so the afternoon is completely free for you to go visit the place, or go back to your city in case of need.

Both BarnaBowl and Valencia Master Bowl ended at 3pm on Sunday, after the last two rounds and the award giving ...

I don't want to pick on you, but I always find European notion of distance funny. We used to drive 200km to Montreal to go to a club on Sat night!

Pack 'la blonde' in the car and take her another weekend. (or is that just Quebec slang)

Well, went to amsterdam, and the trip was about 500 km long, manheim about 450-500 i think ... And thinking of spain or italy, those one are around 1000 km  ... that s just a little bit far just for shopping, and as i got to make the travel for the tourney already, it would just be nice to combine both.

And yes, "la blonde" is a quebec expresssion meaning the girls (We use it in france, but not the same way) ... and by the way, i m single and when i speak about shopping, it s for myself :)

I think it's first a tradeoff between Blood Bowl and sight seeing.

I think the problem is that:
- 5 games is the minimum for a decent 2 day tournament
- Sunday playing time is limited up to 17:00h to 18:00 because many people are going back sunday night.

Now if we have 3 games on Saturday it becomes a tradeoff between a break in the afternoon for Sightseeing/Shopping and hitting a pub in the night. I guess most locals attending would prefer the later.

I think the best solution would be to take a day off work on Friday or Monday and use this to see the city.

Btw ... you did not miss much in Mannheim, although Heidelberg might be worth a visit.

I find North American notions of distance amusing as well..

as if all of Europe could fit into Iowa or something...

I drove to Pisa last year... 15 hours all told.. and I live in the middle of Europe and Pisa is not exactly far south in Italy..

Maybe if more Yanks had passports they would know you can't walk from Paris to Munich on a Sunday afternoon.... :P

lol the distance thing amuses me too. I listen to a few online radio stations and in the same week two of them (1 based in the US and one in canada) BOTH commented on how the UK was "fairly small" and were surprised that everyone didn't really know each other. Totally serious remarks too.

I think Neverdodge's idea quite reasonable. As long as you have the location for playing long enough I won't mind if my last game starts at eight.

That would leave a few more hours for sightseeing and shopping.

It is always a pitty if you have to travel that far and can't see much of the city. But it seems like there are different opinions on that

sometimes organisers are limited in the hours they can use the venue though - I know I wouldn't have been able to keep the place I used open until gone 10.

Anyway when I go for a foreign tourney (in Europe at least) I'm not going to worry about sightseeing. Plenty of time to do it later in life with the missus, whereas the amount of time to play BB is more limited ;)

I think a 4 game tourney is fine and leaves you with Saturday evening to do your sight seeing and shopping.

3 on Friday one early one and awards on Saturday. That is how GenCon was set up so that everyone could see the rest of the convention on Saturday.

Hmmm...going back to the original thought...really don't think tournies with 'sightseeing' windows are at all feasible...
European tournies (at least for us in England) usually mean Friday to Monday..you make your own time. For example a mixed bunch of Germans and English managed Notre Dam and the Eiffel tower and a lot of walking around Paris before we parted company and flew home on Monday after Rendez-vous.

And it just works differently over the pond..population density and travelling distance etc all have a bearing..Europeans will happily get together just in order to play BB and socialise..the travelling distances involved in the US appear to mean that you tend to run tournies inside of 'Cons'...
Just make sure you guys are on the same page when talking tournies..there's some fundamental differences depending on location....

Have you ever looked to see how much of it can fit into Quebec (apprx 1.4m sq KMs?

The funniest was an ex-GF's dutch family asked if the cousins in Vancouver could pick up their daughter in the cheapest flight they found- St John's NFLD., Answer- 'why don't you, you're closer'.

I have lived in Europe and I realise moving around is just different. There are some good highways, but here people drive everywhere and expect to go faster then 100km/h. I have know a whole lot of guys that have driven out west and the first 24 hours driving you are still in Ontario- almost 2000Kms
