Starting an orc team LRB 5

Post by Ashford »

Hi there!

I am about to start my very first BloodBowl team and with only one test-game I am a bit unsure of how this will work out. Hopefully you will be able to give me some advices to get mi started.

What I want is to play a team with some strength, but still enough agility to perform a passing game if the opportunity should arise. Sadly no teams have both players with high S and AV and agility. As this is my first team I have been adviced to go for Orcs. They gives me the high strengt and AV that I want, and should be a durable team. Hopefully they could develope some passing skills too. Therefor I intend to include some goblins, both because I love the modells, but also for using them as Wide recivers. We are going to use the rules of LRB 5 in this league, and I am thinking about the following team:

3 Blitzers, 3 Black orcx, 1 thrower, 2 Goblins, 1 troll, 2 Lineorcs, Fan-factor 4 and 2 re-rolls.

This gives me a lot of strength, 2 goblins with dodge and stunty, a thrower able to throw some accurate passes and the possibility to score a one-turn touchdown in the dying minuts of a match.

So, what do you think, is this a really bad starting team, or could it be used with some suksess? Is it posible to develope it into a team using some throwing game, or is that just hopeless?

Sorry for my bad wording, english is not my mother tongue...

Hmm, well that won't be the most clinical way of using Orcs, but it might still be a lot of fun! IMO you'll want another re-roll. You'll be throwing a lot of blocks with Black Orcs and Linemen, and if you plan to pass then you'll need them for that too (or at least the catches if you have a thrower). You also don't need that much FF to start, and the Troll is a bit of a luxury, so I'd go with this:

4 Black Orcs, 3 Blitzers, 1 Thrower, 2 Linemen, 2 Goblins, 3 re-rolls and FF 1.

Almost as much strength, but more reliable in swapping the Troll for another Black Orc. I always start with 4 Black Orcs - they are the core of the team. Note that this isn't the team I would start myself, just the one I feel is best suited to your aims. I know you wanted to have the chance of scoring a OTS with the Troll, but it really is better to have another re-roll each half. That will win you far more games.

As for developing a passing game, well it is possible. But if you really want to play a passing game, there are better teams with which to do so. With Orcs it might prove to be counterproductive, as you'll be spreading your players across the pitch, and so weakening your cage. But there is a standard Orc tactic you might want to try. Grab the ball with your Thrower and cage it up as normal, keeping your Goblins with the cage and hopefully well protected (probably at the back or in the middle too). Your opponent will try to pick them off as they are an easy target. When you see an opportunity, run BOTH Goblins into possible scoring positions. It is important you get both there, as one is just too tempting and easy a target. In doing this, you will hopefully force you opponent to send players to mark the Goblins, giving you free reign in the middle of the pitch with your cage. If he doesn't, you can of course pass to them and score, though this isn't the primary aim.

4 Black orcs
4 Blitzers
The rest line orcs...

Play the running game and if you feel the need to buy a thrower later.

Get the ball and the pound the opponent into the ground! Foul with the line orcs every turn. Give the ball to a blitzer and watch the pansy elves crumble to dust!

GOOD LUCK.

This may be counterproductive in the current rules, and more likely result in sendings off than casualties. I wouldn't recommend you foul much in your first few games. Keep as many players on the pitch as you can whilst you learn the ropes. :)
