Sorry H&M ... the unmovable object part is what Father Tim is beating on and your solution won't fix it. I'll try and have the computer choose the best square algorithm I can come up with and we'll go from there as this will most closely mimic the skill.

I'll work on it and see if I can come up with something.

this is going to be tough!

I guess a change was needed anyway but the real problem of side step is that it has so many purposes.

You can step into the opponents half when on LOS (having to dodge only 2 times not 3 times)

You can step into the way of a player

You can step to a player so he has to dodge away (ball carrier, a player in a good position for a blitz, ...)

And lots more...
Making Sidestep a Pbem Trait is realy not an option but to develop a algorithm that fits as often as the Interceptionroll is impossible. And we all have had interceptions already wrongly distributed...

Once the ball ended up in the hand of a Lineorc that could not run to the endzone because he was trapped by other players (not surounding him) but a Blitzer was in scoring position (with 3+ dodge)

I would then manually reassign this - the main proviso is that the chance of intercepting must be the same. So you can't use an AG 5 elf in 2 TZs if you had an AG 4 elf with catch in no TZs - yes even if you roll the 6.

I think an algorithm should work ok, but I think it'll get complicated as you need to look at skill combos. For an example a side-stepping guard is used very differently to a side-stepping skink. A guard 9 time out of 10 you will want to move into more tackle zones, particularly if it gets closer to the ball carrier, rather than away from them as Galak's original idea suggests.

I'm sure there are other skills that affect how you use side-step but I have to eat now and can;'t think of them.
