I could think of something like this:

2 Blitzer
9 Lineman
2 RR
7 FF

One RR as in your starting roster could be to low...

Damn, I already need more than my 2 each half.

I started my team with 9 linemen, 2 blitzers 2RR 7FF and it served me well.

1st buy apo, then witch, then 3rd RR

A good lineup. And yes, buy apo as quickly as you can, you'll need it :)

You play the running game.
With that setup, in 7 games:
I scored 14 td
Did 12 cas
Made 14 completions
Got 7 mvp (really amazing no? )

So 115 exp point, 16.4 a game on average, not bad

I drew my 1st game, won twice, drew, lost twice and won
3-2-2 is a decent record.

I would go

1 blitzer
10 line elves

total cost 800k

then you have a choice

either

2 RR 9FF and 10k

3 RR 5 FF

2 RR, apoth, 5 FF

I wouldn't start below 2 RRs. The reason for the blitzer is you need one elf with block to help with blitzing - use him as a safety to hit and run.

Use the line elves to pass (yes cheesy quick passes for 1 SPP). This will ensure that your line elves develop.

What to buy next

apoth (if not already got it)

blitzer or witchelf (prefer blitzer)

witch elf if you bought a blitzer second

Skull 62086 - yeah, play the running game. As you get more fast players (blitzers and witch elves), you can start spreading more your players on your opponent's half and do more 'risky' passes...

Dangerous Dave - having less than 8 (or at worst, 7) ff to start a team is very very very risky in my opinion. With linemen at 70k, you need to spend a lot of money to replace the numerous injuries you will certainly have as a start. 8av is not such a great protection.
I tried myself to start a team with 4 ff (3blitzers and 2rr), and not only did I lose 2 pts of ff in my first 5 matches (actually, that was in matches that I had won!!!), but also did I keep on collecting casualties, even though I was avoiding useless contact as often as I could. My team was getting worse and worse as I could not replace all my maimed players.
Of course one can be lucky, but I don't see the point in assuming that this will automatically happen - thus, I would only go for your first option DD if I do decide to buy only 1 ff.

One big typing mistake: I meant 1 BLITZER, and NOT 1 ff at the end of my previous post...

Skull62086, check out the image shown in the following link:
http://www.midgardbb.com/Tactics/offence_fast.htm
It represents where players are supposed to be when playing the typical agile 'passing game'.

As you'll see, you need to be able to make loads of dodges to put your players where they are shown.
http://www.midgardbb.com/Tactics/offence.html (the part: 'offense with agililty teams') shows well the different steps.

This can be done with fast and agile players. Unfortunately, dark elves are not that fast, and don't come with the dodge skill (apart from witch elves, which me and others do not advise to buy early on...). Therefore, instead of having players in charge of catching the ball, then dodging out and scoring (typical catchers), you need to think pretty much like a strength team, in that the player who will have the ball in his hand will force his way through the opponent's half with a blitz right before he is due to score (That does not mean that he will not have to dodge from other players on his way towards the endzone as well. It's just that a blitz will be necessary.) The best representation of a running game is in the part of the same website, 'offense with strength teams'. Obviously, you will need to adapt the mode of play slightly by making fewer blocks, and leaving as few (if any...) players in direct contact with opposing players. It is the rough principle which is the same: opening a corridor through your opponent's half during the first turn of your drive, then blitzing your way out towards the endzone during the second turn...

Good luck.

I agree a low FF is not the best. But, 5FF is not too bad. Personally I would go the 2 RR, 9FF and 10k route - but IMO the other options are OK too. I went with the apoth and 2RR route in the lustrian league and after 8 games and having a blitzer killed and having my FF reduced to 4 I have a TR of 159 - not too bad.
