I also tend to opt to receive.
It's like cat and mouse. Your opponent wants you to score quickly, but doesn't want you to know, so they have to put some pressure on your offence. If you can make it look like you are going to score quickly, and then hold on for a turn or two more (maybe 4 turns, but 5 turns is obviously better), then the strength team really needs to move the ball quickly when they receive, and may make a mistake, since usually they have 5 or 6 turns to score.
If they really have to concentrate on moving the ball quickly due to a shorter turn limit than they are used to, forming cages and stuff like that are much harder.

Wow, thats a lot of ideas
I knew there must be a good reason for kicking somewhere, just could not think of one.
Now I might just give at a go and see where it gets me, if it helps put pressure on those pesky elves then it must be a good thing.
Only trouble is, knowing my luck i'll lose the toss whenever I want to try it!

The short answer is "no", but it is a qualified "no" because there are odd ways of interpreting the question which could justify the answer "yes".

The only game i can think of ewhere its better to not hasve the ball than to have it is the noble art of Grenade tossing.
Plus in my experience its always better to get the first blocks in, if the defence is continua;lly on the ground for the first half then at some point they are going tom receive a casualty, which means they are weaker for the second half.
