October Rules Review

Post by Chaotic »

Since the time is getting close, does anyone have a list of matters to be considered for the October Rules Review?

It would be interesting to know exactly what is up for consideration.

This is the most complete list of what we want them to discuss that I know of. What they actually discuss will probably be kept a big secret. (I think it makes them feel special.)

Thanks Galak ...

I'll circulate your big list to our coaches. Most appreciated.

However they won't be too impressed with the "secrecy" thing. It can only benefit BBRC and coaches if the agenda was public. At least then we would know whether or not our input was being considered.

I'd agree with that. I like to think our input is considered, if not appreciated.

       @ Sean Newboy. That was good.

I agree with Snots on this one. It would benefit them to give us a peek at the voting record. It could be anonymous. I'm not as concerned with who voted for what as I am with how many votes a topic got.
Besides if you can't figure out what Acerak and Neo are for and against then you probably don't post here enough to know that they are on the BRC.

i miss john's avatar with the kitten...

you know what i like best about the october rules review? the fact that the re-released bb box set will come out with a printed lrb1.3 here in november, right about the time the stuff that's going to constitute lrb2.0 is hitting the streets...

i hate to say it, because i wish it wasn't true, maybe an annual review is too frequent... i'd like to see them get the big problems sorted out this year so that the reviews don't have as much impact on the structure and nature of the game anymore... tweaks can be conveyed to new players and don't make a rulebook woefully obsolete, reworking entire sections of the game's mechanics are trouble...

so, i propose we lock them in a room and they can't come out until they fix secret weapons, events, allies, wizards, yadda yadda yadda yadda....

If the world were nearly perfect and I could count on people being rational or at least civil when it came to rules and the review, then I'm sure we would post the results of the voting. Unfortunately that's not the case. I've been harrassed on more than one occasion by coaches who knew they were right and that I was an idiot for not seeing things their way and I doubt that posting my votes on the subjects would have reduced that number.

It's not the general public which forces us to keep these things private, it's the 1% of fringe types that would endlessly hound us. In the end what possible reason could anyone have for wanting to know the voting results if not to try and lobby a BBRC member to their point of view?

The truth of the matter is that simply by posting on this message board, you've had more imput on the rule than the majority of the blood bowl playing public. Numerous BBRC members read the threads here and often respond to ideas and suggestions. I know we've gleened ideas from these very pages. The only thing that would get you close to the rules would be being a BBRC member yourself. Trust me, you probably don't really want to be a member.

what would be the point of finding out the results in order to lobby members? the voting's done at that point... i think some people are just nosey... and jealous... but i hear the initiation rituals at the 'ol rc' are pretty rough, i'm, kinda glad i'm not in it, i mean, i need that finger...

Neo i have no desire to know who voted yea or nay or abstane on anything, but i would like to know after the votes how things panned out. That is i would like- A) what was discussed B) what was tabled C) What topics had something passed (in any form) D) What things were voted down. I wouldnt need any details, just some basic idea of what went on. Perhaps an article in BB mag giving everyone in the bb community what will be coming down as a result and what wont and what will be discussed next year after play testing is done.

That's an interesting idea Sean. Perhaps an article talking about the process would help.

Well said sean.

Neo, we've all seen Galak's list. It's huge. You guys may or may not handle everything on there. It's unlikely that a majority of the BBRC members even feel that every item is worth discussing. Many points just need a word or two changed/added/omitted to clarify what the rule is actually intended to convey. It's the nitpicky stuff that annoys me most, probably most of us. I know you guys probably want to work on big, elegant, sweeping changes (kicking rules, kickoff tables...), create teams, essentially put your own personal mark on Blood Bowl, heck, I want you guys to do that. You all have some great ideas. I think it's your gate=stadium=weather/turf/ref variations that my league uses and enjoys. It's not that these things aren't important, it's just that a lot of us feel that the really important things are the little ones that keep coming up over and over again. It'd be great to know what got discussed and what didn't. This way we'd know that what's written in the LRB is the way it's intended to be read. It may cut down on the it says this but they meant that arguments.

Example:

A "Pass Block says 3 squares movement. My Treeman moves 3 squares"
B "You're twisting that around. Treemen only move 2 squares on a good day. You, at least, need a GFI to move that last square"
A "The BBRC discussed this in October. They determined that this happens so rarely that, if someone wanted to waste a skill roll on giving a Treeman Pass Block, said Treeman could move 3 squares. Pass Block is special that way"
B "So they did. Hmm."

It's just a cheesy example. I don't know what way it would go. I just wanted to illustrate how it'd help to let us know what got brought up and talked about.

Agreed, Snots its why I made the list ... by now many of us have read it, helped edit it, add to it, delete from it. This is the list of stuff that us commishes have to rule on daily. An official Q&A addressing ever item at least under the clarifications section would do wonders for helping the game.

This might come as a surprise, but this list is smaller than last years and there were just as many "nit picky" items on the list.

We want to cover the little things this year. Sweeping changes need much testing before they can be implimented. What I expect to see is the setting up of experimental rules (Kicking, GFI, Allies) for testing in the next year and the fixing of the smaller items that have bugged many BB players.

This is likely to be a clean up year.
