Hi!
I've sculpted an orc blitzer, just for fun, and now I'm thinking of making a mould if anyone's interested in having one for him/herself. But since I'm new to this I'm not sure how you do it. This is my first miniature I ever sculpted.
Can you make a mould with a painted miniature? or does it have to be unpainted? And most of all how do you make a nice mould? is it expensive?

I have never made a mold for a whole model before. But, I have made some for small bits.

What I do is called press molding. Basically, you take a part coat it with a lubricant that will not dry out or obscure the details. And, then take a enough green stuff to completely surround the item, cut it in half (the green stuff), and press the item into half of it. Coat the other half in your lubricant of choice (I use mineral oil) and press it onto the other half of the item. Let the two halves dry out, then pull apart. If all went well, you will have a mold for your new item. I have made many a ball with this method, and a few other bits as well.

Do a google search on press molding, for much better faq's.

You can make moulds for gravity casting metal using the advice for RTV moulds given on the Hirstarts site.

Gravity casting of metal is a slow, messy, sometimes painful business, but quite good fun to try, and also rather satisfying. The Tiranti site http://www.tiranti.co.uk/ has everything you need (or at least it used to), but isn't necessarilly the cheapest place to go. If you are in the UK then Prince August provided everything I needed for casting http://www.princeaugust.ie.

I wouldn't paint the model first, it'll just mess up your moulds. It is possible to send greens off to get cast professionally, but your plastic components wont survive the vulcanisation process. Possibly something to to take into account for your next sculpt! If you sculpt it all yourself, you also don't need to worry about copyright on any of the components.

Keep up the sculpting, looks like a good start

Which scale, compared to other 3.ed orcs, is this mini ? Can you post a pict which a known GW mini ?

Actually it would not be all that hard to make a mold for him. Oddly enough i think the hardest part to get would be his teeth.

Are you good at mould making sineater? Maybe you could make it?

I am not a pro at it, but i have made quite a number of them.
