Blimey! Quality technique but it looks pretty hardcore to me, especially if you're trying to create something very small. Do people use chains like this for minis? http://www.langleymodels.co.uk/acatalog ... __101.html

I've used something similar before. The issue is that it can be very difficult to get glued down. If you use green stuff it stays put a lot easier and you don't end up with glue splotches everywhere while it moves around on you.

This may be a silly question but could one wait for the bottom part to cure before adding the top sausage so you don't have to worry about deforming when applying pressure to the top?

Yes I don't see why not. but one consideration is that you need to get that bottom layer perfectly done.
Doing both at the same time allows that extra bit of tweaking whilst they are both malleable.

Plus you need it to be pliable in some cases, to drape it along a mini.
