League Websites

Post by ZanzerTem »

Hi everyone,

I just yesterday wrestled the ability to have a webpage from my cable company, and I want to use it for my local league. The hard part now will be designing it :( Can you guys post links to your BB websites for inspiration, along with some pointers for those of you familiar with Frontpage? (I know, it sucks, but its the only thing I got).

The work in progress link below is what I have so far

Thanks to everyone in advance 8)

I think frontpage suffers it's stigmata unjustly.
It's not the best but for what most people need, it does the job just fine.
If you want any help with HTML go here...

And my advice is to steal alot. If yousee something you like, swipe it! lol Put a links page up and give credit but for a little page like yours don't be afraid to snatch pics and trademark images from other pages. (this won't be a popular opinion)

I agree a bit with Pariah on this one. You have to make your own style, but if you see some cool or funny pics, grab em. The same if you see an idea you like, and think it would be usefull to get the info out to those playing your league, use it. Remeber that you are not making a site for the "mass market", but for your league, and stealing some here and there won't matter that much IMO. But i suggest that you find your own style for the league page so its not a complete ripoff.

As for links to other leagues check out this link

and the NAF site :-D

I bought a cheap book for £4 and learnt how to code a web page in 15 minutes just using notepad. HTML is really really easy.

I figure I might borrow from some sites, but it is definately going to be unique. I will have News, Local Events, "Fact of the Day", "Worst Play", "Best Play", ect.... Just need a baseline for my design, and need to figure out Frontpage. I've only worked with the program for about an hour. I don't think I'm doing bad considering my token experience

(Also need to convince the rest of the lazy league to give me updated team rosters  )

Get Textpad (from textpad.com) its got syntax highlighting and shortcuts built in. And its free (though you can pay if you get annoyed by the popup).

I like the page John did for the OBL. My only problem is that everyone can see just how bad my team is!

heh it seems like textpad is used the world over by developers, and everyone seems willing to tolerate the annoying popup!

every single company I've worked for uses it!

Nice site Milo, I wish I had the time to get down and look at DB driven sites and looked into the asp/php coding, would make the updating alot easyer. I like the results that came up on the lower part of the screen alot.

Bloodbasher Masher: Have you tried out Dreamweaver? If you have a good i.net connection you could download a trial from www.macromedia.com . It's alot better than Frontpage in about all areas. You should at least give it a try :D

I love my site. (I can't take full credit for it, since a large part of it came from Casper, though I've made some significant changes too.)

All skill rolls are handled by the system. All aging rolls are handled by the system. Coaches can submit their game results through a simple web form. Their opponent is automatically notified of the match report and asked to approve the results. Once they have, I, as the commissioner, get to review it, click a button, and all the players and standings are automatically updated. The next time the coaches log on, they can roll for and select star player rolls automatically.

Last time I ran a league, we had 24 active coaches. Managing the results became a massive ordeal, involving paper forms, excel spreadsheets, javascripting, HTML -- argh! It was too much for me, even with TeamTracker and LeagueTracker to help me keep track of things. It forced me to take an almost 2-year break from commissioning a league. Now I'm running a 28 coach league and I've hardly broken a sweat.

I LOVE my website. Thank you, Casper!

I don't think my players would like to have the skill rolls rolled for them, they are sensitive about stuff like that. But when I hear how easy you have it, it makes me rethink the whole idea of spending some time to learn to make stuff like that. It sure would save me ALOT of time after I've implemented a system like that. Right now its all that you talked about, exel sheets that needs updating etc. Alot of work.

Sounds almost like heaven the system you have Milo :D

Heiper -- I sure think so. One of these days when I have tons and tons of time, if I can get Casper's approval, I'll rework part of the site so it can support multiple leagues, and then I *might* start hosting leagues for other people. At least, that's a goal. I don't have the first idea when I'd have that kind of time, though.

christer might be able to work something into the fumbbl page

i can't see why anyone would worry about a computer rolling for their skill rolls either, unless they were cheating
