Glory Rule vs. Stalling out the timer

Glory Rule vs. Stalling out the timer

OK, so I'm starting a side league up at my game store, and we MIGHT play with the Glory Rule (if a player can score without making a Go For It or a Dodge, then he must). However, since many of us at the store play with timers, I'm not sure how to get around the possibility that people could move all of the players but the one with the ball and then let time expire.

One option would be to say that if time expires, the player runs in automatically (if no Dodge/GFI required). I'm not sure that I like this, however.

Any thoughts?

Any particular reason you want to favour finesse teams over power teams?

Why is playing slow banned but playing fast allowed? Banning tactics that are perfectly legal within the rules simply ensure your players never get good enough at countering those tactics.

If you don't like a tactic, learn how to beat it - don't just ban it.

Marcus, I mostly agree with you (I personally favor strength teams).

However, I've had enough bitching from people in other games at our shop that I thought I'd at least post a poll on our site to see if people want the rule or not. The good news is it's being voted down 0-2 at the moment, so I'm hoping we don't end up with it. Then, once it's voted down, if anyone ever bitches about it again I'll tell them to shut it, since it's not what the people wanted :D

It's not a question of favouring any team, it's a question of sportsmanship. No one likes to see the other team spend 5 turns 1 square away from the end zone, it's just cheap. In a tournament however that's another story altogether, but in a league fun is supposed to be for everyone, not just the winner.

If you want to stall then do it out of striking distance from the end zone, this gives a bit more of a chance for the defender to attack the ball, it keeps them in the game basically (even if it's only an illusion).

Also, the glory rule simulates the desire for the ball carrier to score, regardless of what the coach wants him to do. If you've ever coached a team at any sport, you'll know what I mean.

Lastly, I think it's rude to assume that the glory rule is there to stop a valid tactic because coaches can't beat it. Whenever someone is stalling one square away from the end zone it's because the other team is so out of the play that they can't do anything about it, much less "beat it".

The glory rule sucks and totally destroys the game. Just forget about it now and never mention it again, your league will be better for it.

I agree that the glory rule is a bad idea. Some teams need to stall the game to win, and limiting the options they get is showing favoritism. Besides, you introduce all kinds of beardiness with a rule like this. People will just camp out 1 go for it away from scoring, and cage the ball further out.

May be unsporting but you can't legislate against unsportsmanlike behaviour.

Besides which, for every player you catch who is being unsporting and waiting 5 turns you'll catch a sporting player who is stalling off one turn to reduce your chances of winning. Some of the most entertaining, friendly and sporting players I've ever played do that frequently.

No-one likes to see their team get fouled to hell and back by a team who is happy to lose the game so long as they cause casualties either, how are you going to legislate against that?

Its not sporting to score really quickly when your opponent can't do so as easily, should ban that as well.

Yeah, the "ban stalling, ban 1 turn touchdowns" argument gets really tired after a while. Sorry to come of brusque but I'm just a little over it. If it wins you the game, good luck to you. I'm not going to complain.

His point (which i agree with) is that one-turn TDs are even more unsportmanlike than stalling. He's not advocating banning both, but rather banning neither. Besides, i believe he was talking about 2-turn TDs as well.

it never ceases to amaze me that people can be short-sighted enough to favor glory rules... probably the same people whose goal in life is to build a one-turn scorer so that when the other team is forced to give them the last turn via the glory rule they can get a guaranteed win... because winning is, afterall, everything.

if you get the glory rule, then my strength teams get a rule that doesn't let your finesse teams move more than 5 squares toward the endzone in any given turn, it's the same thought process... you have a tactic that allows you to win the game by exploiting my weakness, so we need a rule that removes this INTENTIONALLY INCLUDED tactic.

OK, you guys are preaching to the choir here. I was just trying to be democratic about it by asking my league.

I personally don't like the idea of legislating sportsmanship either (not that I think stalling is being a bad sport, but you know what I mean). So, I may just yank the damn poll from my league and not use the rule period :wink:

I think I've seen this before, and it comes to only halflings being permitted to play, without big guys. The Glory rule smells of elf glory. I have enough reasons to dislike elves without adding one more.

Watching a hitting team stall is just as annoying as watching a gutter runner score in one turn. These are things you have to accept in order to play, sometimes you just can't do anything about it, maybe throw a three dice block and let the ogre decide and pray :D
